The Priestly Ministry Inaugurated
1On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel. # 9:1 Ex 18:12 2He said to Aaron, “Take a young bull for a sin # 9:2 Or purification offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, # 9:2 Ex 29:1 and present them before the Lord. 3And tell the Israelites: # 9:3 Sam, LXX read elders of Israel Take a male goat for a sin offering; a calf and a lamb, male yearlings without blemish, for a burnt offering; 4an ox and a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before the Lord; and a grain offering mixed with oil. For today the Lord is going to appear # 9:4 Gn 35:9 to you.”
5They brought what Moses had commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the whole community came forward and stood before the Lord. 6Moses said, “This is what the Lord commanded you to do, that the glory of the Lord # 9:6 Ex 40:34; Lk 9:32 may appear to you.” 7Then Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering; make atonement for yourself and the people. # 9:7 LXX reads and your household,# 9:7 Heb 5:1–3; 7:26–27 Sacrifice the people’s offering and make atonement for them, as the Lord commanded.”
8So Aaron approached the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9Aaron’s sons brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood and applied it to the horns of the altar. He poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10He burned the fat, the kidneys, and the fatty lobe of the liver from the sin offering on the altar, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 11He burned the flesh and the hide # 9:11 Lv 7:8 outside the camp. # 9:11 Ex 29:14; Lv 4:8–10,12,21; 8:17; 16:27
12Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. Aaron’s sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it on all sides of the altar. 13They brought him the burnt offering piece by piece, along with the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14He washed the entrails and the legs and burned them with the burnt offering on the altar.
15Aaron presented the people’s offering. He took the male goat for the people’s sin offering, slaughtered it, and made a sin offering with it as he did before. 16He presented the burnt offering and sacrificed it according to the regulation. # 9:16 Lv 18:26 17Next he presented the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning burnt offering. # 9:17 Ex 29:38–42; Lv 2:2
18Finally, he slaughtered the ox and the ram as the people’s fellowship sacrifice. Aaron’s sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it on all sides of the altar. 19They also brought the fat portions from the ox and the ram — the fat tail, the fat surrounding the entrails, the kidneys, and the fatty lobe of the liver — 20and placed these on the breasts. Aaron burned the fat portions on the altar, 21but he presented the breasts # 9:21 Ex 29:26–27; Lv 7:30–34; 8:26; 10:14–15; Nm 6:20; 18:18 and the right thigh as a presentation offering # 9:21 Ex 29:24 before the Lord, as Moses had commanded. # 9:21 Some Hb mss, LXX, Sam read as the Lord commanded Moses
22Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed # 9:22 Gn 14:19; Nm 6:24–26 them. He came down after sacrificing the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the fellowship offering. 23Moses and Aaron then entered the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24Fire came from the Lord and consumed # 9:24 1Kg 18:38–39; 2Ch 7:1 the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted # 9:24 Ps 35:27; Is 12:6; 24:14 and fell facedown. # 9:24 Nm 16:4

Leviticus 9

Aaron's first sacrifices
1Eight days later Moses called together Aaron, his sons, and Israel's leaders. 2Then he said to Aaron:
Find a young bull and a ram that have nothing wrong with them. Offer the bull to the LORD as a sacrifice for sin and the ram as a sacrifice to please him.#9.2 sacrifice to please him: See the note at 1.1-3.
3Tell the people of Israel that they must offer sacrifices as well. They must offer a goat#9.3 goat: See the note at 1.1-3. as a sacrifice for sin, and a bull and a ram as a sacrifice to please the LORD. The bull and the ram must be a year old and have nothing wrong with them. 4Then the people must offer a bull and a ram as a sacrifice to ask the LORD's blessing#9.4 to ask the LORD's blessing: See the note at 3.1. and also a grain sacrifice#9.4 grain sacrifice: To give thanks to the LORD (see the note at 2.1). mixed with oil. Do this, because the LORD will appear to you today.
5After the animals and the grain had been brought to the front of the sacred tent, and the people were standing there in the presence of the LORD, 6Moses said:
The LORD has ordered you to do this, so that he may appear to you in all his glory. 7Aaron, step up to the altar and offer the sacrifice to please the LORD, then offer the sacrifices for the forgiveness of your sins and for the sins of the people, just as the LORD has commanded.#He 7.27.
8Aaron stepped up to the altar and killed the bull that was to be the sacrifice for his sins. 9His sons brought him the blood. He dipped a finger in it, smeared some on the four corners of the bronze altar, and poured out the rest at its foot. 10But he sent up in smoke the fat, the kidneys, and the lower part of the liver, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 11Then Aaron burnt the skin and the flesh outside the camp.
12After Aaron had killed the ram that was sacrificed to please the LORD, Aaron's sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it against all four sides of the altar. 13They brought him each piece of the animal, including the head, and he burnt them all on the altar. 14He washed the insides and the hind legs and also sent them up in smoke.
15Next, Aaron sacrificed the goat for the sins of the people, as he had done with the sacrifice for his own sins. 16And so, he burnt this sacrifice on the altar in the proper way. 17He also presented the grain sacrifice and burnt a handful of the flour on the altar as part of the morning sacrifice.
18At last, he killed the bull and the ram as a sacrifice to ask the LORD's blessing on the people. Aaron's sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it against the four sides of the altar.#Lv 3.1-11. 19His sons placed all the fat, as well as the kidneys and the lower part of the liver 20on top of the choice ribs. 21Then Aaron burnt the fat on the altar and lifted up#9.21 lifted up: See the note at 7.29,30. the ribs and the right hind leg to show that these were dedicated to the LORD. This was done just as the LORD had instructed Moses.
22Aaron held out his hand and gave the people his blessing, before coming down from the bronze altar where he had offered the sacrifices.#Nu 6.22-26. 23He and Moses went into the sacred tent, and when they came out, they gave the people their blessing. Then the LORD appeared to the people in all his glory. 24The LORD sent fiery flames that burnt up everything on the altar, and when everyone saw this, they shouted and fell to their knees to worship the LORD.
