Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Take Aaron, his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil, # 8:2 Ex 29:7 the bull of the sin # 8:2 Or purification offering, the two rams, and the basket # 8:2 Gn 40:16 of unleavened bread, 3and assemble the whole community # 8:3 Ex 12:47 at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” 4So Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the community assembled at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 5Moses said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.”
6Then Moses presented Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. 7He put the tunic on Aaron, wrapped the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod # 8:7 Ex 28:4 on him. He put the woven band of the ephod around him and fastened it to him. 8Then he put the breastpiece on him and placed the Urim and Thummim # 8:8 Ex 28:30; Nm 27:21; Dt 33:8; 1Sm 28:6; Ezr 2:63; Neh 7:65 into the breastpiece. 9He also put the turban # 8:9 Lv 16:4 on his head and placed the gold medallion, the holy diadem, on the front of the turban, as the Lord had commanded Moses. # 8:1–9 Ex 28:1–43; 29:1–8; 39:1–31
10Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it to consecrate # 8:10 Ex 19:10,14,23; 20:11 them. 11He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them. # 8:10–11 Ex 30:18–28; 38:8; 40:7–11 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed and consecrated him. # 8:12 Ex 29:7; 30:30; Lv 21:10–12 13Then Moses presented Aaron’s sons, clothed them with tunics, wrapped sashes around them, and fastened headbands on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
14Then he brought the bull near for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering. 15Then Moses slaughtered it, # 8:14–15 Or offering, and he slaughtered it. 15Then Moses took the blood, and applied it with his finger to the horns of the altar on all sides, purifying # 8:15 Ex 29:36; Lv 14:49,52; Nm 19:19; Ps 51:7; Ezk 43:22–23; 45:18 the altar. He poured out the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it so that atonement can be made on it. # 8:15 Or it by making atonement for it,# 8:14–15 Ex 29:10–12,36–37; Lv 4:7 16Moses took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys # 8:16 Lv 7:4 with their fat, and he burned them on the altar. # 8:16 Ex 29:13; Lv 4:7–10 17He burned the bull with its hide, flesh, and waste outside the camp, # 8:17 Ex 29:14; 33:7; Lv 4:12,21; 6:4; 9:11; 10:4–5; 13:46; 14:3; 16:27; 17:3; 24:14,23 as the Lord had commanded Moses.
18Then he presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 19Moses slaughtered it and # 8:18–19 Or ram, 19and he slaughtered it. Moses splattered the blood on all sides of the altar. 20Moses cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces, and the fat, # 8:20 Lv 1:8 21but he washed the entrails and legs with water. He then burned the entire ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord as he had commanded Moses.
22Next he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, # 8:22 Ex 29:22,26–34; Lv 7:37; 8:28–33 and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. 23Moses slaughtered it, # 8:22–23 Or ram, 23and he slaughtered it. Moses took some of its blood, and put it on Aaron’s right earlobe, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. # 8:23 Ex 29:20; Lv 14:14,17,25,28 24Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on their right earlobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then Moses splattered the blood on all sides of the altar. 25He took the fat — the fat tail, # 8:25 Lv 3:9 all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat — as well as the right thigh. 26From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one cake of unleavened bread, one cake of bread made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat portions and the right thigh. # 8:26 Ex 29:3,23; Lv 7:32; Nm 6:15–19 27He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons and presented them before the Lord as a presentation offering. 28Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord. 29He also took the breast and presented it before the Lord as a presentation offering; it was Moses’s portion of the ordination ram as the Lord had commanded him.
30Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. In this way he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as his sons and their garments. # 8:30 Ex 29:21; Is 6:6–7; Heb 10:22
31Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket for the ordination offering as I commanded: # 8:31 LXX, Syr, Tg read was commanded; Ex 29:31–32 Aaron and his sons are to eat it. # 8:31 Lv 6:16,18; 10:12; 1Co 9:13–14 32Burn up what remains of the meat and bread. # 8:32 Ex 29:34 33Do not go outside the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the time your days of ordination are completed, because it will take seven days to ordain you. # 8:33 Lit because he will fill your hands for seven days 34The Lord commanded what has been done today in order to make atonement for you. # 8:33–34 Ex 29:35–37; Heb 7:28 35You must remain at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and keep the Lord’s charge # 8:35 Gn 26:5 so that you will not die, # 8:35 Lv 10:1–2 for this is what I was commanded.” 36So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Ordaining the priests
The ceremony for ordaining priests
(Exodus 29.1-37)
1The LORD said to Moses:
2Send for Aaron and his sons, as well as their priestly clothes, the oil for ordination, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and a basket of bread made without yeast. 3Then bring the whole community of Israel together at the entrance to the sacred tent.
4Moses obeyed the LORD, and when everyone had come together, 5he said, “We are here to follow the LORD's instructions.”
6After Moses told Aaron and his sons to step forward, he made them wash themselves. 7He put the priestly shirt and robe on Aaron and wrapped the sash around his waist. Then he put the sacred apron on Aaron and fastened it with the finely woven belt. 8Next, he put on Aaron the sacred breastpiece that was used in learning what the LORD wanted his people to do. 9He placed the turban on Aaron's head, and on the front of the turban was the narrow strip of thin gold as a sign of his dedication to the LORD.
10Moses then dedicated the sacred tent and everything in it to the LORD by sprinkling them with some of the oil for ordination. 11He sprinkled the bronze altar seven times, and he sprinkled its equipment, as well as the large bronze bowl and its base. 12He also poured some of the oil on Aaron's head to dedicate him to the LORD. 13At last, Moses dressed Aaron's sons in their shirts, then tied sashes around them and put special caps on them, just as the LORD had commanded.
14Moses led out the bull that was to be sacrificed for sin, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 15After it was killed, Moses dipped a finger in the blood and smeared some of it on each of the four corners of the bronze altar, before pouring out the rest at the foot of the altar. This purified the altar and made it a fit place for offering the sacrifice for sin. 16Moses then took the fat on the bull's insides, as well as the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat, and sent them up in smoke on the altar fire. 17Finally, he took the skin and the flesh of the bull, together with the food still in its stomach, and burnt them outside the camp, just as the LORD had commanded.
18Moses led out the ram for the sacrifice to please the LORD.#8.18 sacrifice to please the LORD: See the note at 1.1-3. After Aaron and his sons had laid their hands on its head, 19Moses killed the ram and splattered its blood against the four sides of the altar. 20-21Moses had the animal cut up, and he washed its insides and hind legs. Then he laid the head, the fat, and the rest of the ram on the altar and sent them up in smoke with a smell that pleased the LORD. All this was done just as the LORD had commanded.
22Moses led out the ram for the ceremony of ordination. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head, 23and it was killed. Moses smeared some of its blood on Aaron's right ear lobe, some on his right thumb, and some on the big toe of his right foot. 24Moses did the same thing for Aaron's sons, before splattering the rest of the blood against the four sides of the altar. 25He took the animal's fat tail, the fat on its insides, and the lower part of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat, and the right hind leg. 26Then he took from a basket some of each of the three kinds of bread#8.26 three kinds of bread: Made from the finest wheat flour; olive oil was mixed into part of the dough, and some of it was made into thin wafers brushed with oil (see Exodus 29.2,3). that had been made without yeast and had been dedicated to the LORD.
27Moses placed the bread on top of the meat and gave it all to Aaron and his sons, who lifted it up#8.27 lifted it up: See the note at 7.29,30. to show that it was dedicated to the LORD. 28After this, Moses placed it on the fires of the altar and sent it up in smoke with a smell that pleased the LORD. This was part of the ordination ceremony. 29Moses lifted up#8.29 lifted up: See the note at 7.29,30. the choice ribs of the ram to show that they were dedicated to the LORD. This was the part that the LORD had said Moses could have.
30Finally, Moses sprinkled the priestly clothes of Aaron and his sons with some of the oil for ordination and with some of the blood from the altar. So Aaron and his sons, together with their priestly clothes, were dedicated to the LORD.
31Moses said to Aaron and his sons:
The LORD told me that you must boil this meat at the entrance to the sacred tent and eat it there with the bread. 32Burn what is left over 33and stay near the entrance to the sacred tent until the ordination ceremony ends seven days from now. 34We have obeyed the LORD in everything that has been done today, so that your sins may be forgiven.#8.34 forgiven: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text of verse 34. 35The LORD has told me that you must stay near the entrance to the tent for seven days and nights, or else you will die.
36Aaron and his sons obeyed everything that the LORD had told Moses they must do.
