The Empty Tomb
1On # 20:1–2 Mt 28:5–8; Mk 16:5–8; Lk 24:3–8 the first day of the week # 20:1 Lk 24:1; Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 Mary Magdalene # 20:1 Mk 15:40 came to the tomb # 20:1 Jn 5:28 early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone # 20:1 Mt 27:60,66; Mk 15:46 had been removed from the tomb. 2So she went running to Simon Peter # 20:2 Lk 6:14; Jn 21:7; Ac 10:32 and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, # 20:2 Jn 5:28 and we don’t know where they’ve put him! ”
3At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. 5Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths # 20:5 Lk 24:12; Jn 19:40; 20:5–7 lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. 7The wrapping # 20:7 Lk 19:20; Jn 11:44; Ac 19:12 that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths # 20:7 Jn 20:5 but was folded up in a separate place by itself. 8The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed. 9For they did not yet understand the Scripture # 20:9 Mt 26:54 that he must rise # 20:9 Lk 18:33; Ac 2:24 from the dead. # 20:9 Mk 9:9–10; 12:25; Lk 16:31; 24:46; Ac 10:41; 13:34; 17:3,31 10Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11But # 20:11–18 Mk 16:9–11 Mary stood outside the tomb, # 20:11 Jn 5:28 crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. 12She saw two angels # 20:12 Gn 16:7; Mt 13:49; Ac 5:19; Rv 14:6 in white sitting where Jesus’s body # 20:12 Lk 12:4; Jn 2:21 had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? ”
“Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” # 20:13 Lk 10:1; 1Co 8:6 she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”
14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus. # 20:14 Jn 21:4 15“Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking? ”
Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”
16Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, # 20:16 Or Hebrew “Rabboni! ” — which means “Teacher.” # 20:16 Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11
17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended # 20:17 Lk 24:51; Jn 3:13; 6:62; Ac 1:9–11; 2:33–34; Rm 10:6; Eph 1:20–21; 4:8; 1Pt 3:22 to the Father. # 20:17 Mt 5:16; 11:27; Jn 8:42 But go to my brothers # 20:17 Ac 9:30 and tell them that I am ascending to my Father # 20:17 Jn 14:12 and your Father, to my God # 20:17 Mt 27:46 and your God.”
18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord! ” # 20:18 Mk 16:10 And she told them what # 20:18 Lit these things he had said to her.
The Disciples Commissioned
19When it was evening on that first day of the week, # 20:19 Lk 24:1; Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” # 20:19 Jn 14:27; 16:33
20Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. # 20:20 Lk 24:39–40; Jn 19:34; 20:25–29 So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, # 20:21 Jn 3:17; 17:18; Heb 3:1 I also send you.” # 20:21 Jn 13:20; Ac 1:2 22After saying this, he breathed on them # 20:22 Gn 2:7; Ezk 37:9 and said, # 20:22 Lit he breathed and said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit. # 20:22 Ps 51:11; Jn 1:33; 14:17; 16:7; Ac 2:4; 8:15; Rm 8:9; Gl 5:25; Ti 3:5; Rv 3:22 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” # 20:23 Mt 16:19; 18:18; Jn 9:41
Thomas Sees and Believes
24But Thomas # 20:24 Mk 3:18; Jn 11:16 (called “Twin” # 20:24 Gk Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord! ”
But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, # 20:25 Ps 22:16 and put my hand into his side, # 20:25 Jn 20:20 I will never believe.” # 20:25 Dt 9:23; Mk 16:11; Lk 22:67; Jn 4:48; 6:64; Ac 13:41
26A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.” # 20:27 Nm 12:7
28Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God! ”
29Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. # 20:29 Or have you believed? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” # 20:29 2Co 5:7; 1Pt 1:8
The Purpose of This Gospel
30Jesus performed many other signs # 20:30 Jn 2:11; 21:25 in the presence of his disciples that are not written # 20:30 1Jn 1:4 in this book. # 20:30 2Tm 4:13 31But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, # 20:31 Mt 1:17; Ac 18:5; 1Jn 2:22; 5:1 the Son # 20:31 Jn 5:19 of God, # 20:31 Or that the Messiah, the Son of God, is Jesus,# 20:31 Heb 1:2 and that by believing you may have life in his name. # 20:31 Jn 10:27; 1Jn 3:23

1Now on the Yom Rishon, Miryam of Magdala comes early, while it was still dark, to the kever (tomb) and sees the stone having been taken away from the kever. 2Miryam of Magdala runs therefore and comes to Shim'on Kefa and to the talmid ha'ahuv and says to them, They have taken Adoneinu from the kever (tomb) and we do not have da'as where they laid him. 3Therefore, Shim'on Kefa went forth and the other talmid, and they were coming to the kever (tomb), 4And were running, the two together and the other talmid ran ahead faster than Kefa, and came first to the kever, 5And having stooped down, the other talmid#20:5 talmid ha'ahuv sees the tachrichin linen clothes lying there. However, he did not enter the kever. 6Then comes also Shim'on Kefa following him and Shim'on Kefa entered into the kever (tomb), and sees the tachrichin linen clothes lying there. 7And also the mitznefet (head wrapping), which had been upon the rosh of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, the mitznefet not lying with the tachrichin, but apart, having been folded up in one place. 8Then, therefore, entered also the other talmid, the one having come first to the kever (tomb), and he saw and had emunah (faith). 9For they did not yet have da'as of the Kitvei Hakodesh that it is necessary for Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach to have his Techiyas HaMoshiach.#20:9 Ps 16:9; Isa 53:10 10Then the talmidim went away again to their own homes.
11Now Miryam had stood at the kever (tomb) outside weeping. Then, as she was weeping, she bent down into the kever (tomb), 12And sees two malachim (angels) in white, sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the Guf of Yehoshua had previously been lying. 13And those ones say to her, Isha, why do you weep? She says to them, They took Adoni, and I don't have da'as of where they placed him. 14When she had said these things, she turned back around, and she sees Yehoshua standing there, and she did not have da'as that it was Yehoshua. 15Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to her, Isha, why do you weep? Whom do you seek? Miryam, supposing that he was the shomer hagahn (the keeper of the garden), says to him, Adon, if you carried him away, tell me where you placed him, and I'll take him. 16He says to her, Miryam. She turns and she says to him in Ivrit, Rabboni. (This means Mori [my teacher].) 17He says to her, Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet made the aliyah ascent to HaAv; but go to my Achim and tell them, I make the aliyah ascent to Avi and to Avichem, to Elohai and Eloheichem.#20:17 Ps 22:23 18Miryam from Magdala comes announcing to the talmidim, I have seen HaAdon.#20:18 Mal 3:1 And she told them that He had said to her these things.
19On that Yom Rishon, when it was erev, and the delatot (doors) having been shut where the talmidim were, because of fear of those of Yehudah, then came Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and stood in the midst and says to them, Shalom aleichem! 20And having said this, He showed his hands and his side to them. Therefore, the talmidim were filled with simcha at having seen HaAdon.#20:20 Mal 3:1 21Therefore He said to them again, Shalom aleichem! As HaAv has sent Me, so also I send you.#20:21 Gn 2:7; Ezek 37:9 22And having said this, Moshiach breathed on them and says to them, Receive the Ruach Hakodesh. 23If you grant selicha to the averos of any, they have selicha; if there be any whose averos you retain, they are retained.#20:23 Mt 16:19; 18:18; Ac 8:17-24
24But T'oma, one of the Sheneym Asar, the one being called Didymus, was not with them when He came. 25Therefore the other talmidim were saying to him, Ra'i'nu es Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu! (We have seen Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach Adoneinu!) But T'oma said to them, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails and I put my finger into the place of the nails and also put my hand into his side, I will never have emunah (faith).
26And after shmonah yamim (eight days) again the talmidim of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach were inside, and T'oma with them. Although the delatot were shut, He comes and stood in the midst and said, Shalom Aleichem. 27Then He says to T'oma, Bring your finger here and see My hands, and bring your hand and put it into My side, and do not be without emunah but be a ma'amin (Messianic believer). 28In reply, T'oma said to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Adoni and Elohai!#20:28 Ps 35:23 29And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to him, Because you have seen Me, you have emunah (faith)? Ashrey (Happy) are the ones not having seen and having emunah.
30Therefore, many other otot (miraculous signs) Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach also did before the talmidim, which have not been written in this sefer. 31But these things have been written that you might have emunah that Yehoshua is the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, the Ben HaElohim, and that, believing with emunah, you may have Chayyim (Life) b'Shem of Him.
