The Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn
1The Lord said # 11:1 Or had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, # 11:1 Or go, it will be finished— he will drive you out of here. 2Now announce to the people that both men and women should ask their neighbors for silver and gold items.” 3The Lord gave # 11:3 Or had given the people favor with the Egyptians. In addition, Moses himself was very highly regarded # 11:3 Lit was very great in the land of Egypt by # 11:3 Or in the eyes of Pharaoh’s officials and the people. # 11:1–3 Ex 3:21–22; 12:35–36
4So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: About midnight I will go throughout Egypt, 5and every firstborn male in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the servant girl who is at the grindstones, as well as every firstborn of the livestock. 6Then there will be a great cry of anguish through all the land of Egypt such as never was before or ever will be again. 7But against all the Israelites, whether people or animals, not even a dog will snarl, # 11:7 Lit point its tongue so that you may know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. 8All these officials of yours will come down to me and bow before me, saying: Get out, you and all the people who follow you. # 11:8 Lit people at your feet After that, I will get out.” And he went out from Pharaoh’s presence fiercely angry. # 11:8 Ex 12:3; Am 5:17
9The Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen # 11:9 Ex 3:19; 7:4; 10:1 to you, so that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, # 11:10 Ex 4:21; 10:20,27 and he would not let the Israelites go out of his land.

The last disaster and the first Passover
Moses warns the Egyptians that the LORD will kill their firstborn sons
1The LORD said to Moses:
I am going to punish the king#11.1 the king: See the note at 1.11. of Egypt and his people one more time. Then the king will gladly let you leave his land, so that I will stop punishing the Egyptians. He will even chase you out. 2Now go and tell my people to ask their Egyptian neighbours for gold and silver jewellery.
3So the LORD made the Egyptians greatly respect the Israelites, and everyone, including the king and his officials, considered Moses an important leader.
4Moses went to the king and said:
I have come to let you know what the LORD is going to do. About midnight he will go through the land of Egypt, 5and wherever he goes, the firstborn son in every family will die. Your own son will die, and so will the son of the lowest slave woman. Even the firstborn males of cattle will die. 6Everywhere in Egypt there will be loud crying. Nothing like this has ever happened before or will ever happen again.
7But there won't be any need for the Israelites to cry. Things will be so quiet that not even a dog will be heard barking. Then you Egyptians will know that the LORD is good to the Israelites, even while he punishes you. 8Your leaders will come and bow down, begging me to take my people and leave your country. Then we will leave.
Moses was very angry; he turned and left the king.
9What the LORD had earlier said to Moses came true. He had said, “The king of Egypt won't listen. Then I will perform even more miracles.” 10So the king of Egypt saw Moses and Aaron work miracles, but the LORD made him stubbornly refuse to let the Israelites leave his country.
