The Call to Sanctification
1Additionally then, brothers and sisters, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received instruction from us on how you should live and please God — as you are doing # 4:1 Lit walking — do this even more. 2For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
3For this is God’s will, # 4:3 1Th 5:18 your sanctification: # 4:3 Rm 6:19,22; 1Co 1:30; 2Th 2:13; 1Tm 2:15; Heb 12:14; 1Pt 1:2 that you keep away # 4:3 1Tm 4:3 from sexual immorality, 4that each of you knows how to control his own body # 4:4 Or to acquire his own wife; lit to possess his own vessel in holiness and honor, 5not with lustful passions, # 4:5 2Pt 1:4; 2:10 like the Gentiles, who don’t know God. 6This means one must not transgress against and take advantage # 4:6 2Co 12:17 of a brother or sister in this manner, because the Lord is an avenger of all these offenses, as we also previously told and warned you. 7For God has not called us to impurity # 4:7 Mt 23:27; 2Co 12:21; Gl 5:19; Eph 4:19; 5:3; Col 3:5; 1Th 2:3 but to live in holiness. 8Consequently, anyone who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. # 4:8 Ps 51:11; Jn 1:33; Ac 2:4; Rm 8:9; Gl 5:25; Ti 3:5; 1Jn 5:8; Rv 3:22
Loving and Working
9About brotherly love: You don’t need me to write you because you yourselves are taught by God # 4:9 Jn 6:45 to love one another. # 4:9 1Jn 3:11 10In fact, you are doing this toward all the brothers and sisters in the entire region of Macedonia. # 4:10 Ac 16:9 But we encourage you, brothers and sisters, to do this even more, 11to seek to lead a quiet life, # 4:11 Lk 14:4; 23:56; Ac 11:18; 21:14 to mind your own business, # 4:11 Lit to practice one’s own things and to work # 4:11 2Th 3:12; 2Jn 8 with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12so that you may behave properly # 4:12 Rm 13:13; 1Co 14:40 in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone. # 4:12 Or not need anything, or not be in need,# 4:12 Eph 4:28
The Comfort of Christ’s Coming
13We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. # 4:13 Jr 14:19; Eph 2:12; 1Th 1:3 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose # 4:14 Lk 18:33 again, # 4:14 Rm 14:9,15; 1Co 8:11; 15:3–4; 2Co 5:15 in the same way, through Jesus, # 4:14 Jn 14:19; Rm 8:11; 1Co 6:14; 15:18–20; 2Co 4:14; Php 1:23 God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15For we say this to you by a word from the Lord: # 4:15 2Pt 1:21; Rv 11:8 We who are still alive at the Lord’s coming # 4:15 1Jn 2:28 will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. # 4:15 1Co 15:51 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, # 4:16 Or command,# 4:16 Jn 5:25 with the archangel’s # 4:16 Jd 9 voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ # 4:16 Rm 16:7; 1Co 15:18; 1Pt 5:14; Rv 14:13; 20:5 will rise first. 17Then # 4:17 1Co 15:23,51–52 we who are still alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds # 4:17 Mt 26:64 to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage # 4:18 Or comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4
4
1Lemaskana (finally), Achim b'Moshiach, we ask and exhort you in Adoneinu Yehoshua, in order that, just as from us [Moshiachʼs Shlichim] you received [as authoritative halachic tradition, as the Messianic teaching to be followed] how it is necessary for you to be fier zich (comport oneself) in your derech (way of life) and to please Hashem (just as you in fact are doing), so you should abound more and more. 2For you have da'as what mitzvot (commandments) we gave you through [Moshiach] Adoneinu Yehoshua. 3For this is the ratzon Hashem (the will of G-d), your kedushah (holiness), your consecration, that you abstain from zenut (fornication), 4That each one of you#4:4 as Kedoshim have da'as of how to control your own k'li (vessel) in kedushah and kavod, 5Not in the passion of ta'avah (evil desire, lust) like Goyim who do not have da'as of Hashem; 6That no man commit peysha and take advantage of one of his Achim b'Moshiach in this [sexual] matter, because Hashem is the Nokem (Avenger) concerning all these things, just as also we told you before and warned you. 7For [as far as our bechirah (election) is concerned], Hashem did not summon us for tu'ma (uncleanness) but in kedushah (holiness). 8Therefore, the one rejecting this mitzvah (commandment) does not reject Bnei Adam but Hashem who gives to you His Ruach Hakodesh.
9Concerning the matter of ahavah shel achvah (brotherly love), you have no need that we write you, for you yourselves are limudei Elohim (taught of G-d) to have ahavah (agape) one for another. 10For indeed this you do toward all the Achim b'Moshiach in all of Macedonia. But in this we exhort you, Chaverim, to abound more and more. 11And have as your ambition to lead a quiet life of shalom bayis, and to mind your own business, and to have a parnasah, working with your own hands, according to the mitzvot (commandments) we gave you. 12The tachlis (purpose) is that the way you fier zich (comport oneself) in your derech (way of life) be conducted properly toward outsiders and that you might not be nitzrach (needy).
13We do not want you to lack da'as, Chaverim, concerning those who have “fallen asleep.” The purpose is that you not have agmat nefesh (grief) like the rest, who do not have tikvah (hope). 14For, if we have an Ani Ma'amin belief that Yehoshua had his histalkus and then stood up alive again in the Techiyas HaMoshiach from HaMesim, even so, Hashem will bring with him#4:14 Moshiach those who have fallen asleep through Yehoshua. 15For this we say to you by the Dvar Hashem, that we who are alive and have been left behind until the Bi'as (Coming, Parousia of) Moshiach Adoneinu, may in no way be kodem (preceding) those who have fallen asleep. 16For Adoneinu Himself, at the signal, at the bat kol of the Sar HaMalachim (the Archangel), and at the shofar blast of Hashem, shall come down from Shomayim, and the Mesim in Moshiach shall stand up alive in the Techiyas HaMesim first. 17Then,#4:17 next in sequence we who are alive and who have been left behind simultaneously with them shall be snatched up in the ananim (clouds) to meet Adoneinu in the air. And so always with Adoneinu we shall be. 18Therefore, give chozek (strength) and speak divrei chizzuk (words of encouragement), comforting one another with these words.
