Philistines Reject David
1The Philistines#1Sm 28:1–2 brought all their military units together at Aphek#Jos 12:18; 1Sm 4:1 while Israel was camped by the spring in Jezreel.#1Kg 18:19; 21:1; 2Kg 9:30 2As the Philistine leaders were passing in review with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men#1Sm 28:1–2 were passing in review behind them with Achish. 3Then the Philistine commanders asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
Achish answered the Philistine commanders, “That is David, servant of King Saul of Israel. He has been with me a considerable period of time.#29:3 Hb obscure From the day he defected until today, I’ve found no fault with him.”#1Sm 27:4–12
4The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him.#1Sm 27:6 He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle.#1Sm 14:21 What better way could he ingratiate himself with his master than with the heads of our men? 5Isn’t this the David they sing about during their dances:
Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands?” #1Sm 18:7; 21:11
6So Achish summoned David and told him, “As the Lord lives, you are an honorable man. I think it is good#29:6 Lit It was good in my eyes to have you fighting#29:6 Lit you going out and coming in in this unit with me, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until today.#1Sm 27:8–12; 29:3 But the leaders don’t think you are reliable. 7Now go back quietly and you won’t be doing anything the Philistine leaders think is wrong.”
8“But what have I done?” #1Sm 27:10–12 David replied to Achish. “From the first day I entered your service until today, what have you found against your servant to keep me from going to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9Achish answered David, “I’m convinced that you are as reliable as an angel of God.#2Sm 14:17,20; 19:27 But the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’#1Sm 29:4 10So get up early in the morning, you and your masters’ servants who came with you.#29:10 LXX adds and go to the place I appointed you to. Don’t take this evil matter to heart, for you are good before me.#1Ch 12:19,22 When you’ve all gotten up early, go as soon as it’s light.” 11So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

The Philistines Mistrust David
1Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in Jezreel. 2And the lords of the Philistines were proceeding on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish. 3Then the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and I have found no fault in him from the day he deserted to me to this day?” 4But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man go back, that he may return to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For with what could this man make himself acceptable to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of these men? 5Is this not David, of whom they sing in the dances, saying,
‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6Then Achish called David and said to him, “As the Lord lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army are pleasing in my sight; for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing in the sight of the lords. 7Now therefore return and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.” 8David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day when I came before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9But Achish replied to David, “I know that you are pleasing in my sight, like an angel of God; nevertheless the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go up with us to the battle.’ 10Now then arise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who have come with you, and as soon as you have arisen early in the morning and have light, depart.” 11So David arose early, he and his men, to depart in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
