Psalms 59

Psalm 59
Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.
To the Chief Musician; set to [the tune of] “Do Not Destroy.” A Mikhtam of David, [a record of memorable thoughts] when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.
1Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
Set me securely on an inaccessibly high place away from those who rise up against me.
2Deliver me from those who practice wrongdoing,
And save me from bloodthirsty men.
3Look! They lie in wait for my life;
Fierce and powerful men [are uniting together to] launch an attack against me,
Not for my wrongdoing nor for any sin of mine, O Lord.
4They run and set themselves against me though there is no guilt in me;
Stir Yourself to meet and help me, and see [what they are doing]!
5You, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Arise to punish all the nations;
Spare no one and do not be merciful to any who treacherously plot evil. Selah.
6They return at evening, they howl and snarl like dogs,
And go [prowling] around the city.
7Look how they belch out [insults] with their mouths;
Swords [of sarcasm, ridicule, slander, and lies] are in their lips,
For they say, “Who hears us?”
8But You, O Lord, will laugh at them [in scorn];
You scoff at and deride all the nations.
9¶O [God] my strength, I will watch for You;
For God is my stronghold [my refuge, my protector, my high tower].
10My God in His [steadfast] lovingkindness will meet me;
God will let me look triumphantly on my enemies [who lie in wait for me].
11Do not kill them, or my people will forget;
Scatter them and make them wander [endlessly] back and forth by Your power, and bring them down,
O Lord our shield!
12For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips,
Let them even be trapped in their pride,
And on account of the curses and lies which they tell.
13Destroy them in wrath, destroy them so that they may be no more;
Let them know that God rules over Jacob (Israel)
To the ends of the earth. Selah.
14They return at evening, they howl and snarl like dogs,
And go [prowling] around the city.
15They wander around for food [to devour]
And growl all night if they are not satisfied.
16¶But as for me, I will sing of Your mighty strength and power;
Yes, I will sing joyfully of Your lovingkindness in the morning;
For You have been my stronghold
And a refuge in the day of my distress.
17To You, O [God] my strength, I will sing praises;
For God is my stronghold [my refuge, my protector, my high tower], the God who shows me [steadfast] lovingkindness.

Psalm 59
For the choir director; al tashcheth; a miktam by David when Saul sent men to watch David’s home and kill him.
1Rescue me from my enemies, O my God.
Protect me from those who attack me.
2Rescue me from troublemakers.
Save me from bloodthirsty people.
3They lie in ambush for me right here!
Fierce men attack me, O Lord,
but not because of any disobedience,
4or any sin, or any guilt on my part.
They hurry to take positions against me.
Wake up, and help me; see ⌞for yourself⌟.
5O Lord God of Armies, God of Israel,
arise to punish all the nations.
Have no pity on any traitors. Selah
6They return in the evening.
They howl like dogs.
They prowl the city.
7See what pours out of their mouths—
swords from their lips!
⌞They think,⌟ “Who will hear us?”
8O Lord, you laugh at them.
You make fun of all the nations.
9O my strength, I watch for you!
God is my stronghold, my merciful God!
10God will come to meet me.
He will let me gloat over those who spy on me.
11Do not kill them.
Otherwise, my people may forget.
Make them wander aimlessly by your power.
Bring them down, O Lord, our shield,
12 ⌞because of⌟ the sins from their mouths
and the words on their lips.
Let them be trapped by their own arrogance
because they speak curses and lies.
13Destroy them in your rage.
Destroy them until not one of them is left.
Then they will know that God rules Jacob
to the ends of the earth. Selah
14They return in the evening.
They howl like dogs.
They prowl the city.
15They wander around to find something to eat.
If they are not full enough,
they will stay all night.
16But I will sing about your strength.
In the morning I will joyfully sing about your mercy.
You have been my stronghold
and a place of safety in times of trouble.
17O my strength, I will make music to praise you!
God is my stronghold, my merciful God!
