PSALM 60
Lament over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.
To the Chief Musician; set to [the tune of] “The Lily of the Testimony.” A Mikhtam of David [intended to record memorable thoughts and] to teach; when he struggled with the Arameans of Mesopotamia and the Arameans of Zobah, and when Joab returned and struck twelve thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
1O God, You have rejected us and cast us off. You have broken [down our defenses and scattered] us;
You have been angry; O restore us and turn again to us.
2You have made the land quake, You have split it open;
Heal its rifts, for it shakes and totters.
3You have made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us wine to drink that makes us stagger and fall.
4You have set up a banner for those who fear You [with awe-inspired reverence and submissive wonder—a banner to shield them from attack],
A banner that may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
5That Your beloved ones may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand and answer us.
6God has spoken in His holiness [in His promises]:
“I will rejoice, I will divide [the land of] Shechem and measure out the Valley of Succoth [west to east].
7Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim is My helmet;
Judah is My scepter.
8Moab is My #I.e. the household pot used for washing the feet.washbowl;
Over Edom I shall throw My shoe [in triumph];
Over Philistia I raise the shout [of victory].”
9Who will bring me into the besieged city [of Petra]?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10Have You not rejected us, O God?
And will You not go out with our armies?
11Give us help against the enemy,
For the help of man is worthless (ineffectual, without purpose).
12Through God we will have victory,
For He will trample down our enemies.

Psalm 60
For the choir director; according to shushan eduth; #60:0 Unknown musical term. a miktam by David; for teaching. When David fought Aram Naharaim and Aram Zobah, and ⌞when⌟ Joab came back and killed 12,000 men from Edom in the Dead Sea region.
1O God, you have rejected us.
You have broken down our defenses.
You have been angry.
Restore us!
2You made the land quake.
You split it wide open.
Heal the cracks in it
because it is falling apart.
3You have made your people experience hardships.
You have given us wine that makes us stagger.
4Yet, you have raised a flag for those who fear you
so that they can rally to it
when attacked by bows ⌞and arrows⌟. Selah
5Save ⌞us⌟ with your powerful hand, and answer us
so that those who are dear to you may be rescued.#60:5 Verses 5–12 are virtually identical in wording to Psalm 108:6–13.
6God has promised the following through his holiness:
“I will triumph!
I will divide Shechem.
I will measure the valley of Succoth.
7Gilead is mine.
Manasseh is mine.
Ephraim is the helmet on my head.
Judah is my scepter.
8Moab is my washtub.
I will throw my shoe over Edom.
I will shout in triumph over Philistia.”
9Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10Isn’t it you, O God, who rejected us?
Isn’t it you, O God, who refused to accompany our armies?
11Give us help against the enemy
because human assistance is worthless.
12With God we will display great strength.
He will trample our enemies.
