The Disease on the Farm Animals
1Then the Lord told Moses, “Go to the king of Egypt. Tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go to worship me. 2You might refuse to let them go and continue to hold them. 3Then the Lord will punish you. He will send a terrible disease on all your farm animals. He will cause all of your horses, donkeys, camels, cattle and sheep to become sick. 4But the Lord will treat Israel’s animals differently from the animals of Egypt. None of the animals that belong to the Israelites will die. 5The Lord has set tomorrow as the time he will do this in the land.’” 6The next day the Lord did as he promised. All the farm animals in Egypt died. But none of the animals belonging to Israelites died. 7The king sent people to see what had happened to the animals of Israel. They found that not one of them had died. But the king was still stubborn. He did not let the people go.
The Boils
8The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Fill your hands with the ashes from a furnace. Moses, throw the ashes into the air in front of the king of Egypt. 9The ashes will spread like dust through all the land of Egypt. The dust will cause boils to break out and become sores on the skin. These sores will be on people and animals everywhere in the land.”
10So Moses and Aaron took ashes from a furnace. Then they went and stood before the king. Moses threw ashes into the air. It caused boils to break out and become sores on people and animals. 11The magicians could not stand before Moses. This was because all the Egyptians had boils, even the magicians. 12But the Lord made the king stubborn. So he refused to listen to Moses and Aaron. This happened just as the Lord had said.
The Hail
13Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and go to the king of Egypt. Tell him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go to worship me. 14If you do not do this, this time I will punish you with all my power. I will punish you, your officers and your people. Then you will know that there is no one in the whole land like me. 15By now I could have used my power and caused a bad disease. It would have destroyed you and your people from the earth. 16But I have let you live for this reason: to show you my power. In this way my name will be talked about in all the earth. 17You are still against my people. You do not want to let them go. 18So at this time tomorrow, I will send a terrible hailstorm. It will be the worst in Egypt since it became a nation. 19Now send for your animals and whatever you have in the fields. Bring them into a safe place. The hail will fall on every person or animal that is still in the fields. If they have not been brought in, they will die.’” 20Some of the king’s officers respected the word of the Lord. They hurried to bring their slaves and animals inside. 21But others ignored the Lord’s message. They left their slaves and animals in the fields.
22The Lord told Moses, “Raise your hand toward the sky. Then the hail will start falling over all the land of Egypt. It will fall on people, animals and on everything that grows in the fields of Egypt.” 23So Moses raised his walking stick toward the sky. And the Lord sent thunder and hail. And lightning flashed down to the earth. So he caused hail to fall upon the land of Egypt. 24There was hail, and there was lightning flashing as it hailed. This was the worst hailstorm in Egypt since it had become a nation. 25The hail destroyed everything that was in the fields in all the land of Egypt. The hail destroyed both people and animals. It also destroyed everything that grew in the fields. It broke all the trees in the fields. 26The only place it did not hail was in the land of Goshen. The people of Israel lived there.
27The king sent for Moses and Aaron. He told them, “This time I have sinned. The Lord is in the right. And I and my people are in the wrong. 28Pray to the Lord. We have had enough of God’s thunder and hail. I will let you go. You do not have to stay here any longer.”
29Moses told the king, “When I leave the city, I will raise my hands to the Lord in prayer. And the thunder and hail will stop. Then you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord. 30But I know that you and your officers do not yet fear the Lord God.”
31The flax was in bloom, and the barley had ripened. So these crops were destroyed. 32But both wheat crops ripen later. So they were not destroyed.
33Moses left the king and went outside the city. He raised his hands to the Lord. And the thunder and hail stopped. The rain also stopped falling to the ground. 34The king saw that the rain, hail and thunder had stopped. Then he sinned again. He and his officers became stubborn again. 35The king became stubborn and refused to let the Israelites go. This happened just as the Lord had said through Moses.

Plague Five: Livestock Death
1And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Release my people so that they may serve me.” 2But if you are refusing to release and you still are keeping hold of them, 3look, the hand of Yahweh is about to be present with a very severe#Literally “heavy” plague on your livestock that are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the cattle, and on the sheep and goats. 4But Yahweh will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, and not a thing will die from all that belongs to the Israelites.’ ”#Literally “sons/children of Israel” 5And Yahweh set an appointed time, saying, “Tomorrow Yahweh will do this thing in the land.”
6And Yahweh did this thing the next day; all the livestock of Egypt died, but from the livestock of the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” not one died. 7And Pharaoh sent to check, and it turned out#Literally “look” not even one from the livestock of Israel had died, but Pharaoh’s heart was insensitive,#Literally “heavy” and he did not release the people.
Plague Six: Painful Sores
8And Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take for yourselves full handfuls of soot from a smelting furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heavens before the eyes of Pharaoh. 9And it will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will become on humans and on animals a skin sore sprouting blisters in all the land of Egypt.” 10And they took the soot of the smelting furnace, and they stood before Pharaoh, and Moses sprinkled it toward the heavens, and it became skin sores sprouting blisters on humans and on animals. 11And the magicians were not able to stand before Moses because of the skin sores, for the skin sores were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. 12And Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken to Moses.
Plague Seven: Hail
13And Yahweh said to Moses, “Start early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. Look, he is going out to the water, and you must say to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Release my people so that they may serve me. 14For at this time I am sending all of my plagues to you personally#Literally “to your heart,” that is, in a way designed to receive attention and among your servants and among your people so that you will know that there is no one like me in all the earth. 15For now I could have stretched out my hand, and I could have struck you and your people with the plague, and you would have perished from the earth. 16But for the sake of this I have caused you to stand—for the sake of showing you my strength and in order to proclaim my name in all the earth. 17Still you are behaving haughtily to my people by not releasing them. 18Look, about this time tomorrow, I am going to cause very severe#Literally “heavy” hail to rain, the like of which has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. 19And now send word; bring into safety your livestock and all that belongs to you in the field. The hail will come down on every human and animal that is found in the field and not gathered into the house, and they will die.” ’ ”
20Anyone from the servants of Pharaoh who feared the word of Yahweh caused his servants and livestock to flee to the houses. 21But whoever did not give regard to#Literally “put his heart to” the word of Yahweh abandoned his servants and his livestock in the field.
22And Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand to the heavens, and let there be hail in all the land of Egypt, on human and on animal and on all the vegetation of the field in the land of Egypt.” 23And Moses stretched out his staff to the heavens, and Yahweh gave thunder#The word often translated “voice” or “sound” is also used to describe thunder, as in this chapter and hail, and fire went to the earth, and Yahweh caused hail to rain on the land of Egypt. 24And there was hail, and fire was flashing back and forth in the midst of the very severe hail, the like of which was not in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. 25And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, from human to animal, and the hail struck all the vegetation of the field and smashed every tree of the field. 26Only in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” were, there was no hail.
27And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I have sinned this time. Yahweh is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. 28Pray to Yahweh. The thunder of God and hail are enough,#Literally “much/great from the being of the voices/thunder” and I will release you, and you will no longer have to stay.”#Literally “you will not add to stand/remain” 29And Moses said to him, “At my leaving the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunder will stop, and the hail will be no more, so that you will know that the earth belongs to Yahweh. 30But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the presence of Yahweh God.”
31And the flax and the barley were struck, because the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, because they are late-ripening.
33And Moses went from Pharaoh out of the city, and he spread his hands to Yahweh, and the thunder and the hail stopped, and rain did not pour on the earth. 34And Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder stopped, and he again sinned#Literally “he added to sin” and made his heart insensitive,#Literally “he made his heart heavy” he and his servants. 35And Pharaoh’s heart was hard, and he did not release the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” as Yahweh had said by the agency of Moses.#Literally “by the hand of Moses”
