Exodus 10

The Locusts
1The Lord said to Moses, “Go to the king of Egypt. I have made him and his officers stubborn. I did this so I could show them my powerful miracles. 2I also did this so you could tell your children and your grandchildren. Tell them how I made fools of the Egyptians. Tell them about the miracles I did among them. Then all of you will know that I am the Lord.”
3So Moses and Aaron went to the king. They told him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to be sorry for what you have done? Let my people go to worship me. 4If you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country. 5They will cover the land, and no one will be able to see the ground. They will eat anything that was left from the hailstorm. They will eat the leaves from every tree growing in the field. 6They will fill your palaces and all your officers’ houses. They will fill the houses of all the Egyptian people. There will be more locusts than your fathers or ancestors have ever seen. There will be more locusts than there have been since people began living in Egypt.’” Then Moses turned and walked away from the king.
7The king’s officers asked him, “How long will this man make trouble for us? Let the Israelite men go to worship the Lord their God. Don’t you know that Egypt is ruined?”
8So Moses and Aaron were brought back to the king. He said to them, “Go and worship the Lord your God. But tell me, just who is going?”
9Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old people, our sons and daughters and sheep and cattle. This is because we are going to have a feast to honor the Lord.”
10The king said to them, “The Lord really will have to be with you if ever I let you and all of your children leave Egypt. See, you are planning something evil. 11No! Only the men may go and worship the Lord. That is what you have been asking for.” Then the king forced Moses and Aaron out of his palace.
12The Lord told Moses, “Raise your hand over the land of Egypt, and the locusts will come. They will spread all over the land of Egypt. They will eat all the plants that the hail did not destroy.”
13So Moses raised his walking stick over the land of Egypt. And the Lord caused a strong wind to blow from the east. It blew across the land all that day and night. When morning came, the east wind had brought the locusts. 14Swarms of locusts covered all the land of Egypt and settled everywhere. There were more locusts than ever before or after. 15The locusts covered the whole land so that it was black. They ate everything that was left after the hail. They ate every plant in the field and all the fruit on the trees. Nothing green was left on any tree or plant anywhere in Egypt.
16The king quickly called for Moses and Aaron. He said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17Now forgive my sin this time. Pray to the Lord your God. Ask him to stop this punishment that kills.”
18Moses left the king and prayed to the Lord. 19So the Lord changed the wind. He made a very strong wind to blow from the west. It blew the locusts away into the Red Sea. Not one locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20But the Lord caused the king to be stubborn again. And he did not let the people of Israel go.
The Darkness
21Then the Lord told Moses, “Raise your hand toward the sky, and darkness will cover the land of Egypt. It will be so dark you will be able to feel it.” 22So Moses raised his hand toward the sky. Then total darkness was everywhere in Egypt for three days. 23No one could see anyone else. And no one could go anywhere for three days. But the Israelites had light where they lived.
24Again the king of Egypt called for Moses. He said, “All of you may go and worship the Lord. You may take your women and children with you. But you must leave your sheep and cattle here.”
25Moses said, “You must let us have animals to use as sacrifices and burnt offerings. We have to offer them to the Lord our God. 26So we must take our animals with us. Not a hoof will be left behind. We have to use some of the animals to worship the Lord our God. We do not yet know exactly what we will need to worship the Lord. We will know when we get there.”
27But the Lord made the king stubborn again. So he refused to let them go. 28Then he told Moses, “Get out of here! Don’t come here again! The next time you see me, you will die.”
29Then Moses told the king, “I’ll do what you say. I will not come to see you again.”

Exodus 10

Plague Eight: Locusts
1And Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have made his heart insensitive#Literally “heavy” and the heart of his servants in order to put these signs of mine in his midst, 2so that you will tell in the ears of your child and your grandchild#Literally “the son of your son” that I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and so that you will tell about my signs that I have done among them, and so you will know that I am Yahweh.”
3And Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and they said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, ‘Until when will you refuse to submit before me? Release my people so that they may serve me. 4But if you are refusing to release my people, look, I am about to bring locusts into your territory tomorrow. 5And they will cover the surface of the land, and no one will be able to see the land, and they will eat the remainder of what is left—what is left over for you from the hail—and they will eat every sprouting tree belonging to you from the field. 6And your houses will be full, and the houses of all your servants and the houses of all Egypt, something that your fathers and your grandfathers#Literally “the fathers of your fathers” never saw from the day they were on the earth until this day.’ ” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh.
7And the servants of Pharaoh said to him, “Until when will this be a snare for us? Release the men so that they may serve Yahweh their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?” 8And Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Serve Yahweh your God. Who are the ones going?#Literally “who and who the goers?” 9And Moses said, “With our young and with our old we will go; with our sons and with our daughters, with our sheep and goats and with our cattle we will go because it is the feast of Yahweh for us.” 10And he said to them, “Let Yahweh be thus with you as soon as I release you and your dependents.#Or “little children” or “little ones” See that evil is before your faces. 11No indeed;#Literally “not so” just the men#This word for “men” indicates that Pharaoh means only the able-bodied men can go go and serve Yahweh, since this is what you are seeking.” And he drove them out from the presence of Pharaoh.
12And Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt with the locusts so that they may come up over the land of Egypt, and let them eat all the vegetation of the land, all that the hail left behind.” 13And Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and Yahweh drove an east wind into the land all that day and all night. The morning came, and the east wind had brought the locusts. 14And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and they settled in all the territory of Egypt, very severe.#Literally “heavy” Before it there were not locusts like them, nor will there be after it. 15And they covered the surface of all the land, and the land was dark with them, and they ate all the vegetation of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left, and no green was left in the trees nor in the vegetation of the field in all the land of Egypt.
16And Pharaoh hurried to call Moses and Aaron, and he said, “I have sinned against Yahweh your God and against you. 17And now forgive my sin surely this time, and pray to Yahweh your God so that he may only remove from me this death.” 18And he went out from Pharaoh, and he prayed to Yahweh. 19And Yahweh turned a very strong west wind#Literally “sea wind,” a wind from the Mediterranean Sea to the west and lifted up the locusts and thrust them into the Red Sea,#Literally “sea of reed” and not one locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. 20And Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not release the Israelites.#Literally “sons/children of Israel”
Plague Nine: Darkness
21And Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the heavens so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt and so that a person can feel darkness.” 22And Moses stretched out his hand toward the heavens, and there was darkness of night in all the land of Egypt for three days. 23No one could see his brother, and because of it no one could move from where they were#Literally “a man did not rise from under it” for three days, but there was light for the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” in their dwellings.
24And Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Go, serve Yahweh. Only your sheep and goats and your cattle must be left behind. Your dependents#Or “little children” or “little ones”; the term here includes women and children and men too old or ill to fight may also go with you.” 25And Moses said, “Even if you yourself put into our hand sacrifices and burnt offerings and we offer them to Yahweh our God, 26our livestock must also go with us. Not a hoof can be left because we must take from them to serve Yahweh our God. And we will not know with what we are to serve Yahweh until we come there.” 27And Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to release them. 28And Pharaoh said to him, “Go from me. Be careful#Literally “watch for you” not to see my face again, because on the day of your seeing my face you will die.” 29And Moses said, “That is right.#Literally “right you said” I will not again see your face.”#Literally “I will not add again seeing of your face”
