Divrei-HamYamim Alef (1 Ch) 17
17
1After David had been living in his palace awhile, he said to Natan the prophet, “Here, I’m living in a cedar-wood palace; but the ark for the covenant of Adonai is kept under a tent!” 2Natan said to David, “Go, do everything that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
3But that same night the word of God came to Natan: 4“Go, and tell David my servant that this is what Adonai says: ‘You are not to build me a house to live in, 5because from the day I brought up Isra’el until today, I never lived in a house; rather, I’ve gone from tent to tent and from one tabernacle to another. 6Everywhere I traveled with all Isra’el, did I ever speak a word to any of the judges of Isra’el, whom I ordered to shepherd my people Isra’el, asking, “Why haven’t you built me a cedar-wood house?”’
7“Therefore say to my servant David that this is what Adonai-Tzva’ot says: ‘I took you from the sheep-yards, from following the sheep, to make you chief over my people Isra’el. 8I have been with you wherever you went, I have destroyed all your enemies ahead of you; and I am making your reputation like the reputations of the greatest people on earth. 9I will assign a place to my people Isra’el; I will plant them there, so that they can live in their own place without being disturbed any more. The wicked will no longer devastate them, as they did at the beginning, 10and as they did from the time I ordered judges to be over my people Isra’el; instead, I will subdue all your enemies.
“‘Moreover, I tell you that Adonai will make you a house. 11When your days come to an end and you go to be with your ancestors, I will establish one of your descendants to succeed you, one of your own sons; and I will set up his rulership. 12He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13I will be a father for him, and he will be a son for me; I will not take my grace away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14Rather, I will maintain him in my house and in my kingdom forever; and his throne will be set up forever.’” 15Natan told David all of these words and described this entire vision.
16Then David went in, sat before Adonai and said, “Who am I, Adonai, God, and what is my family, that has caused you to bring me this far? 17Yet in your view, God, even this was but a small thing; so you have said that your servant’s dynasty will continue on into the distant future. You have regarded me, Adonai, God, as a man of high rank. 18What more can David say to you about the honor you are bestowing on your servant? For you know your servant intimately. 19Adonai, it is for your servant’s sake and in accordance with your own heart that you have done all this greatness and revealed all these great things. 20Adonai, there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you — everything we have heard confirms that. 21Who can be compared with your people Isra’el? What other nation on earth did God set out to redeem and turn into a people for himself? You made yourself a reputation by doing great and terrifying things, as you drove out the nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt. 22For you made your people Isra’el your people forever; and you, Adonai, became their God. 23So now, Adonai, let the word that you spoke concerning your servant and his house be confirmed forever; do what you have promised. 24May your name be confirmed and magnified forever; so that it will be said, ‘Adonai-Tzva’ot is the God of Isra’el and the God for Isra’el, and the dynasty of David your servant will be set up in your presence.’ 25For you, my God, have disclosed to your servant that you will build him a house. This is why your servant has the courage to pray to you. 26Now, Adonai, you are God; and you have made this wonderful promise to your servant; 27and now it has pleased you to bless the family of your servant and thereby cause it to continue forever in your presence. For you, Adonai, have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”

The Lord's Message to David
(2 Samuel 7.1-17)
1Soon after David moved into his new palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Look around! I live in a palace made of cedar, but the sacred chest is kept in a tent.”
2Nathan replied, “The Lord is with you—do what you want.”
3That night, the Lord told Nathan 4to go to David and tell him:
David, you are my servant, so listen carefully: You are not the one to build a temple for me. 5I didn't live in a temple when I brought my people out of Egypt, and I don't live in one now. A tent has always been my home wherever I have gone with them. 6I chose special leaders and told them to be like shepherds for my people Israel. But did I ever say anything to even one of them about building a cedar temple for me?
7David, this is what I, the Lord All-Powerful, say to you. I brought you in from the fields where you took care of sheep, and I made you the leader of my people. 8Wherever you went, I helped you and destroyed your enemies right in front of your eyes. I have made you one of the most famous people in the world.
9I have given my people Israel a land of their own where they can live in peace. They will no longer have to tremble with fear—evil nations won't bother them, as they did 10when I let judges rule my people, and I will keep your enemies from attacking you.
Now I promise that like you, your descendants will be kings. 11I'll choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried beside your ancestors. I'll make him a strong ruler, 12and no one will be able to take his kingdom away from him. He will be the one to build a temple for me. 13#2 Co 6.18; He 1.5. I will be like a father to him, and he will be like a son to me. I will never put an end to my agreement with him, as I put an end to my agreement with Saul, who was king before you. 14I will make sure that your son and his descendants will rule my people and my kingdom forever.
15Nathan told David exactly what the Lord had said.
David Gives Thanks to the Lord
(2 Samuel 7.18-29)
16David went into the tent he had set up for the sacred chest. He sat there and prayed:
Lord God, my family and I don't deserve what you have already done for us, 17and yet you have promised to do even more for my descendants. You are treating me as if I am a very important person.#17.17 You are treating me … person: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. 18I am your servant, and you know my thoughts. What else can I say, except that you have honored me? 19It was your choice to do these wonderful things for me and to make these promises.
20No other god is like you, Lord—you alone are God. Everything we have heard about you is true. 21And there is no other nation on earth like Israel, the nation you rescued from slavery in Egypt to be your own. You became famous by using great and wonderful miracles to force other nations and their gods out of your land, so that your people could live here. 22You have chosen Israel to be your people forever, and you have become their God.
23 Lord God, please do what you promised me and my descendants. 24Then you will be famous forever, and everyone will say, “The Lord All-Powerful rules Israel and is their God.”
My kingdom will be strong, 25because you are my God, and you have promised that my descendants will be kings. That's why I have the courage to pray to you like this, even though I am only your servant.
26You are the Lord God, and you have made this good promise to me. 27Now please bless my descendants forever, and let them always be your chosen kings. You have already blessed my family, and I know you will bless us forever.
