Romans 2

2
The Righteous Judgment of God
1Therefore you are without excuse, O man, # Ro 1:20; 2:3 whoever you are who judges, for when you judge another, you condemn yourself, for you who judge do the same things. # 2Sa 12:5–7 2But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who commit such things. 3Do you think, O man, who judges those who do such things, # Lk 12:14 and who does the same thing, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4Do you despise the riches of His goodness, tolerance, and patience, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? # Ex 34:6; Isa 30:18
5But because of your hardness and impenitent heart, # Eze 3:7 you are storing up wrath against yourself on the day of wrath when the righteous judgment of God will be revealed, # Jude 6 6and He “will render to every man according to his deeds.” # Ps 62:12; Pr 24:12; Mt 16:27; 2Co 5:10; Rev 22:12 # 2:6 Ps 62:12; Pr 24:12. 7To those who by patiently doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality will be eternal life. # 1Co 15:53–54; 2Ti 1:10 8But for those who are contentious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be indignation and wrath. 9There will be tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man who does evil, to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile. # Ac 3:26; Ro 1:16; 2:10; 1Pe 4:17 10But glory, honor, and peace will be to every man who does good work # Isa 32:17 —to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile, 11for there is no partiality with God. # Dt 10:17; 2Ch 19:7; Ac 10:34
12As many as have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, # 1Co 9:21 and as many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law, 13for the hearers of the law are not justified before God, but the doers of the law will be justified. # Mt 7:21; Jas 2:24 14For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, # Ro 2:12 do by nature the things contained in the law, these, not having the law, are a law unto themselves, 15who show the work of the law written in their hearts, # Jer 31:33; Ro 2:29 their conscience also bearing witness, while their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them, 16in the day when, according to my gospel, # Ro 16:25; 1Ti 1:11 God will judge # Ac 10:42 the secrets of men through Jesus Christ.
The Jews and the Law
17Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God. # Mic 3:11; Ro 2:23 18You know His will and approve the things that are more excellent, # Php 1:10 because you are instructed in the law. 19You are confident that you are a guide to the blind, # Mt 15:14; Jn 9:40–41 a light to those who are in darkness, 20an instructor of the foolish, and a teacher of babes, who have the full content of knowledge and truth in the law: 21You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach not to steal, do you steal? # Ps 50:16–21 22You who say not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? # Mal 3:8; Ac 19:37 23You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? # Jn 5:45; Ro 2:17 24As it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” # 2Sa 12:14; Isa 52:5 # 2:24 Isa 52:5; Eze 36:22.
25Circumcision indeed is of value if you keep the law, # Jer 4:4 but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteousness of the law, # Ro 8:4 will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27Will the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, not judge you who, # Mt 12:41–42 by the letter of the law and circumcision, violate the law? # Ro 2:29
28He is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is external in the flesh. # Mt 3:9; Gal 6:15 29But he is a Jew who is one inwardly. And circumcision is of the heart, by the Spirit, and not by the letter. # Dt 10:16; Jer 4:4 His praise is not from men, but from God. # 2Co 10:18; Php 3:3; 1Pe 3:4
