Psalms 79

79
A Psalm of Asaph.
1O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance;
Your holy temple have they defiled;
they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. # 2Ch 36:19; Jer 26:18
2The dead bodies of Your servants
have they given to the birds of the heavens as food, # Jer 7:33
the flesh of Your faithful to the beasts of the earth. # Jer 16:4
3Their blood have they poured out like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was no one to bury them. # Jer 14:16; 16:4
4We have become a reproach to our neighbors,
a scorn and derision to those who are around us. # Ps 80:6
5How long, O  Lord? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy burn like fire? # Ps 74:1; 85:5; 89:46
6Pour out Your wrath
upon the nations that do not know You,
and upon the kingdoms
that do not call upon Your name. # Ps 14:4; Jer 10:25
7For they have devoured Jacob,
and laid waste his dwelling place.
8Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers;
let Your tender mercies come speedily to us,
for we have been brought very low. # Ps 116:6; 142:6
9Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of Your name;
deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
for Your name’s sake! # 2Ch 14:11; Jer 14:7
10Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?” # Ps 42:3, 10
Let the avenging of the shed blood of Your servants
be known among the nations before our eyes!
11Let the groaning of the prisoners come before You; # Ps 102:20
according to the greatness of Your power
preserve those who are appointed to die.
12And render to our neighbors sevenfold # Ge 4:15 into their lap # Jer 32:18
the reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13But we, Your people and the sheep of Your pasture, # Ps 74:1; 95:7
will give You thanks forever;
we will declare Your praise
to all generations.
