Another Warning about Immoral Women

1Follow my advice, my son;

always treasure my commands.

2Obey my commands and live!

Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.#7:2 Hebrew as the pupil of your eye.

3Tie them on your fingers as a reminder.

Write them deep within your heart.

4Love wisdom like a sister;

make insight a beloved member of your family.

5Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman,

from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.

6While I was at the window of my house,

looking through the curtain,

7I saw some naive young men,

and one in particular who lacked common sense.

8He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman,

strolling down the path by her house.

9It was at twilight, in the evening,

as deep darkness fell.

10The woman approached him,

seductively dressed and sly of heart.

11She was the brash, rebellious type,

never content to stay at home.

12She is often in the streets and markets,

soliciting at every corner.

13She threw her arms around him and kissed him,

and with a brazen look she said,

14“I’ve just made my peace offerings

and fulfilled my vows.

15You’re the one I was looking for!

I came out to find you, and here you are!

16My bed is spread with beautiful blankets,

with colored sheets of Egyptian linen.

17I’ve perfumed my bed

with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18Come, let’s drink our fill of love until morning.

Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses,

19for my husband is not home.

He’s away on a long trip.

20He has taken a wallet full of money with him

and won’t return until later this month.#7:20 Hebrew until the moon is full.”

21So she seduced him with her pretty speech

and enticed him with her flattery.

22He followed her at once,

like an ox going to the slaughter.

He was like a stag caught in a trap,#7:22 As in Greek and Syriac versions; Hebrew reads slaughter, as shackles are for the discipline of a fool.

23awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart.

He was like a bird flying into a snare,

little knowing it would cost him his life.

24So listen to me, my sons,

and pay attention to my words.

25Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.

Don’t wander down her wayward path.

26For she has been the ruin of many;

many men have been her victims.

27Her house is the road to the grave.#7:27 Hebrew to Sheol.

Her bedroom is the den of death.

불신실한 자의 어리석음

1 # 히, ‘내 아들아’. 스승이 제자를 부르는 말 아이들아,

내 말을 지키고,

내 명령을

너의 마음 속 깊이 간직하여라.

2내 명령을 지켜서 잘 살고

내 교훈을

너의 눈동자를 보호하듯 지켜라.

3그것을 너의 손가락에 매고,

네 마음 속 깊이 새겨 두어라.

4지혜에게는

“너는 내 누이”라고 말하고,

명철에게는

“너는 내 친구”라고 불러라.

5그러면 그것이

너를 음행하는

여자로부터 지켜 주고,

달콤한 말로 호리는

외간 여자로부터 지켜 줄 것이다.

부도덕한 여인

6나는, 나의 집 창가에서

창살문으로 내다보다가,

골목 모퉁이로 가까이 가서,

그 여자의 집으로 가는 길로

발걸음을 옮겼다.

9저녁이 되어 땅거미가 지고,

밤이 되어 어두워진 때였다.

10한 여자가 창녀 옷을 입고서,

교활한 마음을 품고

그에게 다가갔다.

11그 여자는 마구 떠들며,

예의 없이 굴며,

발이 집에 머물러 있지를 못한다.

12때로는 이 거리에서,

때로는 저 광장에서,

길목마다 몸을 숨기고 있다가,

13그 젊은이를 와락 붙잡고

입을 맞추며,

뻔뻔스러운 얼굴로

그에게 말하였다.

14“오늘 나는 #또는 ‘친교제’화목제를 드려서,

서원한 것을 실행하였습니다.

15그래서 나는 당신을 맞으러 나왔고,

당신을 애타게 찾다가,

이렇게 만나게 되었습니다.

16내 침대에는 요도 깔아 놓았고,

무늬 있는 이불도 펴놓았습니다.

17누울 자리에는 몰약과

침향과 육계향을 뿌려 두었습니다.

18자, 어서 가서 아침이 되도록

한껏 사랑에 빠지고,

서로 사랑하면서 즐깁시다.

19남편도 먼 여행길을 떠나서

집에 없습니다.

20돈주머니를 가지고 갔으니,

보름달이 뜰 때라야

집에 돌아올 겁니다.”

21이렇게

여러 가지 달콤한 말로 유혹하고

호리는 말로 꾀니,

22그는 선뜻

이 여자의 뒤를 따라 나섰다.

마치

도살장으로 끌려가는 소와도 같고,

올가미에 채이러 가는

# 칠십인역과 시리아어역에는 ‘사슴’ 어리석은 사람과도 같다.

23마치 자기 목숨을 잃는 줄도 모르고

그물 속으로 쏜살같이 날아드는

새와 같으니,

마침내 화살이

그의 간을 꿰뚫을 것이다.

24 # 히, ‘아들들아’ 스승이 제자를 부르는 말 아이들아,

이제 너희는 나의 말을 잘 들어라.

내가 하는 말을 명심하여라.

25네 마음이

그 여자가 가는 길로

기울지 않게 하고,

그 여자가 가는 길로

빠져 들지 않게 하여라.

26그 여자에게

상처를 입고 쓰러진 사람이 많고,

그 여자 때문에 죽은 남자도

헤아릴 수 없이 많다.

27그런 여자의 집은

스올로 트인 길이며,

죽음의 안방으로 내려가는 길이다.
