The Empty Tomb
1Now on the #Matt. 28:1–8; Mark 16:1–8; Luke 24:1–10; Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the #Matt. 27:60, 66; 28:2; Mark 15:46; 16:4; Luke 24:2; John 11:38stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the #John 21:23, 24other disciple, #John 13:23; 19:26; 21:7, 20, 24whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3#Luke 24:12Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5And he, stooping down and looking in, saw #John 19:40the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7and #John 11:44the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8Then the #John 21:23, 24other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9For as yet they did not know the #Ps. 16:10; Acts 2:25, 31; 13:34, 35Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11#Mark 16:5But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
14#Matt. 28:9; Mark 16:9Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and #(Luke 24:16, 31); John 21:4did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
16Jesus said to her, #John 10:3“Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
17Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet #Mark 16:19; Luke 24:5; Acts 1:9; 2:34–36; Eph. 4:8–10; Heb. 4:14ascended to My Father; but go to #Ps. 22:22; Matt. 18:10; Rom. 8:29; Heb. 2:11My brethren and say to them, #John 16:28; 17:11‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to #Eph. 1:17My God and your God.’ ”
18#Matt. 28:10; Luke 24:10, 23Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
The Apostles Commissioned
19#Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36; John 14:27; 1 Cor. 15:5Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for #John 9:22; 19:38fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, #John 14:27; 16:33; Eph. 2:17“Peace be with you.” 20When He had said this, He #Acts 1:3showed them His hands and His side. #John 16:20, 22Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! #(Matt. 28:18–20); John 17:18, 19; (2 Tim. 2:2); Heb. 3:1As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23#Matt. 16:19; 18:18If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Seeing and Believing
24Now Thomas, #John 11:16called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and #Ps. 22:16; Zech. 12:10; 13:6; 1 John 1:1reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be #Mark 16:14unbelieving, but believing.”
28And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. #2 Cor. 5:7; 1 Pet. 1:8Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
That You May Believe
30And #John 21:25truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31#Luke 1:4but these are written that #John 19:35; 1 John 5:13you may believe that Jesus #Luke 2:11; 1 John 5:1is the Christ, the Son of God, #John 3:15, 16; 5:24; (1 Pet. 1:8, 9)and that believing you may have life in His name.

The Empty Tomb
1Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] removed from the [groove across the entrance of the] tomb. [Matt 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10] 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the #20:2 See note 19:26.other disciple (John), whom Jesus loved (esteemed), and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and #20:2 This indicates others were also present.we do not know where they have laid Him!” 3So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. [Luke 24:12] 4And the two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. 5Stooping down and looking in, he saw the linen #20:5 Removing the burial wrappings and spices from a dead, decaying body would have been not only extremely difficult (if not impossible), but overwhelmingly nauseating. If a tomb robber had even attempted such a thing, the tomb would have been left in shambles. It would make no sense for a tomb robber to remove a dead body from the wrappings before stealing it.wrappings [neatly] lying there; but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came up, following him, and went into the tomb and saw the linen wrappings [neatly] lying there; 7and the [burial] #20:7 The word used here, soudarion, is taken from Latin (sudarium), where it refers to a linen handkerchief (cf Acts 19:12) or large linen napkin. This suggests something of the dimensions of the cloth, which was probably a new, unused piece of material.face-cloth which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the [other] linen wrappings, but #20:7 Jesus either caused the tight linen wrappings to fall from His body miraculously or His resurrected body miraculously passed through the linen wrappings, leaving them just as they were where He was lying (except for the face-cloth), unlike Lazarus who emerged from the tomb and had to be released from the wrappings. In either case, the grave wrappings would collapse on themselves on the flat surface of the slab where His body had been placed. The text also indicates that Jesus may have removed the face-cloth Himself once His hands were free, and neatly placed it apart from the other wrappings.rolled up in a place by itself. 8So the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in too; and he saw [the wrappings and the face-cloth] and #20:8 John, the “other disciple,” knew immediately that no one could have fabricated the sight before him: (1) no one could have surreptitiously removed the stone covering the entrance (cf Matt 28:2), even if the guards assigned to the tomb had fallen asleep, as they were later paid to say by the chief priests (Matt 28:13); (2) removing the grave clothes from a dead body in a dark tomb in the middle of the night made no sense (cf note v 5); (3) stealing Jesus’ body would have accomplished nothing. The disciples’ reaction of disbelief when told of His resurrection implies they were neither expecting nor prepared for this miraculous event (cf Matt 28:16, 17; Mark 16:8-14; Luke 24:6-11). The actual resurrection of a living, flesh-and-bone Jesus gave the disciples the courage to begin proclaiming anew the message of salvation, and provided the strength for them to face both great personal suffering and martyrdom for their faith.believed [without any doubt that Jesus had risen from the dead]. 9For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. [Ps 16:10] 10Then the disciples went back again to their own homes.
11But Mary [who had returned] was standing outside the tomb sobbing; and so, as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13And they said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” She told them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? For whom are you looking?” Supposing that He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you are the one who has carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him, and I will take Him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in #20:16 I.e. Jewish Aramaic.Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “#20:17 In her joy Mary had probably reverently embraced Jesus at the knees or ankles.Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ” 18Mary Magdalene came, reporting to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus among His Disciples
19So when it was evening on that same day, the first day of the week, though the disciples were [meeting] behind barred doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “#20:19 A normal Hebrew greeting.Peace to you.” 20After He said this, He showed them His hands and His side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with great joy. 21Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you [as My representatives].” 22And when He said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. [Acts 1:8; 2:1-3] 23If you forgive the sins of anyone they are forgiven [because of their faith]; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained [and remain unforgiven because of their unbelief].”
24But Thomas, one of the twelve [disciples], who was called Didymus (the twin), was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”
26Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, “Peace to you.” 27Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe.” [Luke 24:39] 28Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God] are they who did not see [Me] and yet believed [in Me].”
Purpose of Writing this Gospel
30There are also many other signs (attesting miracles) that Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these have been written so that you may believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God; and that by believing [and trusting in and relying on Him] you may have life in His name. [Ps 2:7, 12]
