II Timothy 2
2
Be Strong in Grace
1You therefore, #1 Tim. 1:2my son, #Eph. 6:10be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3You therefore must #2 Tim. 4:5endure hardship #1 Cor. 9:7; 1 Tim. 1:18as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4#(2 Pet. 2:20)No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5And also #(1 Cor. 9:25)if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. 7Consider what I say, and may the Lord #Prov. 2:6give you understanding in all things.
8Remember that Jesus Christ, #Rom. 1:3, 4of the seed of David, #1 Cor. 15:4was raised from the dead #Rom. 2:16according to my gospel, 9#Acts 9:16for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, #Eph. 3:1even to the point of chains; #Acts 28:31; (2 Tim. 4:17)but the word of God is not chained. 10Therefore #Eph. 3:13I endure all things for the sake of the elect, #2 Cor. 1:6; 1 Thess. 5:9that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11This is a faithful saying:
For #Rom. 6:5, 8; 1 Thess. 5:10if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him.
12#(Matt. 19:28); Luke 22:29; (Rom. 5:17; 8:17)If we endure,
We shall also reign with Him.
#Matt. 10:33; Luke 12:9; 1 Tim. 5:8If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
13If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He #Num. 23:19; Titus 1:2cannot deny Himself.
Approved and Disapproved Workers
14Remind them of these things, #1 Tim. 5:21; 6:4; 2 Tim. 2:23; Titus 3:9charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15#1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Pet. 1:10Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17And their message will spread like cancer. #1 Tim. 1:20Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18who have strayed concerning the truth, #1 Cor. 15:12saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 19Nevertheless #Matt. 24:24; (1 Cor. 3:11)the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord #Num. 16:5; (Nah. 1:7); John 10:14, 27knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
20But in a great house there are not only #Rom. 9:21vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, #2 Cor. 9:8; (Eph. 2:10);2 Tim. 3:17prepared for every good work. 22#1 Tim. 6:11Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24And #Titus 3:2a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, #Titus 1:9able to teach, #1 Tim. 3:3; Titus 1:7patient, 25#Gal. 6:1; Titus 3:2; 1 Pet. 3:15in humility correcting those who are in opposition, #Acts 8:22if God perhaps will grant them repentance, #1 Tim. 2:4so that they may know the truth, 26and that they may come to their senses and #1 Tim. 3:7escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

2 Timothy 2

A Loyal Soldier of Christ Jesus
1Timothy, you are like a son to me. Be strong in the grace that we have in Christ Jesus. 2You and many others have heard what I have taught. You should teach the same thing to some people you can trust. Then they will be able to teach it to others. 3Share in the troubles that we have. Accept them like a true soldier of Christ Jesus. 4A soldier wants to please his commanding officer, so he does not waste his time doing the things that most people do. 5If an athlete is running a race, he must obey all the rules in order to win. 6The farmer who works hard should be the first person to get some of the food that he grew. 7Think about these things that I am saying. The Lord will give you the ability to understand all these things.
8Remember Jesus Christ. He is from the family of David. After Jesus died, he was raised from death. This is the Good News that I preach, 9and I am suffering because of that Good News. I am even bound with chains like a criminal. But God’s teaching is not in chains. 10So I patiently accept all these troubles. I do this so that those whom God has chosen can have the salvation that is in Christ Jesus. With that salvation comes glory that never ends.
11This teaching is true:
If we died with him,
then we will also live with him.
12If we accept suffering,
then we will also rule with him.
If we say we don’t know him,
then he will say he doesn’t know us.
13If we are not faithful,
he will still be faithful,
because he must be true to who he is.
A Worker Pleasing to God
14Continue teaching these things. And warn people before God not to argue about words. Arguing about words does not help anyone, and it ruins those who listen. 15Do the best you can to be the kind of person that God will approve, and give yourself to him. Be a worker who is not ashamed of his work—a worker who uses the true teaching in the right way. 16Stay away from those who talk about useless worldly things. That kind of talk will lead a person more and more away from God. 17Their evil teaching will spread like a sickness inside the body. Hymenaeus and Philetus are men like that. 18They have left the true teaching. They say that the rising from death of all men has already taken place. And those two men are destroying the faith of some people. 19But God’s strong foundation continues to stand. These words are written on that foundation: “The Lord knows those who belong to him.”# Quotation from Numbers 16:5. And also these words are written on that foundation, “Everyone who says that he believes in the Lord must stop doing wrong.”
20In a large house there are things made of gold and silver. But also there are things made of wood and clay. Some things are used for special purposes, and others are made for ordinary jobs. 21If anyone makes himself clean from evil things, he will be used for special purposes. He will be made holy, and the Master can use him. He will be ready to do any good work.
22Stay away from the evil desires of youth. Try hard to live right and to have faith, love, and peace. Work for these things together with those who have pure hearts and who trust in the Lord. 23Stay away from foolish and stupid arguments. You know that such arguments grow into bigger arguments. 24And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel! He must be kind to everyone. He must be a good teacher. He must be patient. 25The Lord’s servant must gently teach those who do not agree with him. Maybe God will let them change their hearts so that they can accept the truth. 26The devil has trapped them and causes them to do what he wants. But maybe they can wake up and free themselves from the devil’s trap.
