Psalms 79

Psalm 79
A Psalm of Asaph.
1¶ O God, the Gentiles are come into thine inheritance; they have defiled the temple of thy holiness; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
2The dead bodies of thy slaves they have given to be food unto the fowls of the heavens, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3They have shed their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
4We are reproached by our neighbours, scorned, and derided by those that are round about us.
5How long, Lord? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6¶ Pour out thy wrath upon the Gentiles that do not know thee and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon thy name.
7For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling place.
8O remember not against us former iniquities; let thy tender mercies speedily meet us on the way, for we are very poor.
9Help us, O God, our saving health, for the honor of thy name and deliver us and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.
10Why should the Gentiles say, Where is their God? let him be known among the Gentiles in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy slaves which is shed.
11Let the sighing of the prisoners come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve those that are appointed to die
12and render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, with which they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: from generation to generation we will sing thy praises.

Psalm 79
A psalm by Asaph.
1O God, the nations have invaded the land that belongs to you.
They have dishonored your holy temple.
They have left Jerusalem in ruins.
2They have given the dead bodies of your servants
to the birds for food.
They have given the flesh of your godly ones
to the animals.
3They have shed the blood of your people around Jerusalem
as though it were water.
There is no one to bury your people.
4We have become a disgrace to our neighbors,
an object of ridicule and contempt to those around us.
5How long, O Lord?
Will you remain angry forever?
Will your fury continue to burn like fire?
6Pour your fury on the nations that do not know you,
on the kingdoms that have not called you.
7They have devoured Jacob.
They have destroyed his home.
8Do not hold the crimes of our ancestors against us.
Reach out to us soon with your compassion,
because we are helpless.
9Help us, O God, our savior, for the glory of your name.
Rescue us, and forgive our sins for the honor of your name.
10Why should the nations ⌞be allowed to⌟ say,
“Where is their God?”
Let us watch as the nations learn
that there is punishment for shedding the blood of your servants.
11Let the groans of prisoners come into your presence.
With your powerful arm rescue those who are condemned to death.
12Pay each one of our neighbors back
with seven times the number of insults they used to insult you, O Lord.
13Then we, your people, the flock in your pasture,
will give thanks to you forever.
We will praise you throughout every generation.
