The Inner Temple
1 Then he brought me to the outer sanctuary, and measured the jambs; the jambs were 10½ feet#tn Heb “six cubits” (i.e., 3.15 meters). wide on each side. 2 The width of the entrance was 17½ feet,#tn Heb “ten cubits” (i.e., 5.25 meters). and the sides#tc The translation follows the LXX. The MT reads “the width of the gate was three cubits,” the omission due to haplography.tn Or “sidewalls.” of the entrance were 8¾ feet#tn Heb “five cubits” (i.e., 2.625 meters). on each side. He measured the length of the outer sanctuary as 70 feet,#tn Heb “forty cubits” (i.e., 21 meters). and its width as 35 feet.#tn Heb “twenty cubits” (i.e., 10.5 meters).
3 Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance as 3½ feet,#tn Heb “two cubits” (i.e., 1.05 meters). the entrance as 10½ feet,#tn Heb “six cubits” (i.e., 3.15 meters). and the width of the entrance as 12¼ feet#tn Heb “seven cubits” (i.e., 3.675 meters). 4 Then he measured its length as 35 feet,#tn Heb “twenty cubits” (i.e., 10.5 meters). and its width as 35 feet,#tn Heb “twenty cubits” (i.e., 10.5 meters). before the outer sanctuary. He said to me, “This is the most holy place.”
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple#tn Heb “house” throughout Ezek 41. as 10½ feet,#tn Heb “six cubits” (i.e., 3.15 meters). and the width of the side chambers as 7 feet,#tn Heb “four cubits” (2.1 meters). all around the temple. 6 The side chambers were in three stories, one above the other, thirty in each story. There were offsets in the wall all around to serve as supports for the side chambers, so that the supports were not in the wall of the temple. 7 The side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story;#tc The Hebrew is difficult here. The Targum envisions a winding ramp or set of stairs, which entails reading the first word as a noun rather than a verb and reading the second word also not as a verb, supposing that an initial mem has been read as vav and nun. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:549. for the structure#tn The Hebrew term occurs only here in the OT. surrounding the temple went up story by story all around the temple. For this reason the width of the temple increased as it went up, and one went up from the lowest story to the highest by the way of the middle story.
8 I saw that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full measuring stick#tn Heb “reed.” of 10½ feet#tn Heb “six cubits” (i.e., 3.15 meters). high. 9 The width of the outer wall of the side chambers was 8¾ feet,#tn Heb “five cubits” (i.e., 2.625 meters). and the open area between the side chambers of the temple 10 and the chambers of the court was 35 feet#tn Heb “twenty cubits” (i.e., 10.5 meters). in width all around the temple on every side. 11 There were entrances from the side chambers toward the open area, one entrance toward the north, and another entrance toward the south; the width of the open area was 8¾ feet#tn Heb “five cubits” (i.e., 2.625 meters). all around.
12 The building that was facing the temple courtyard at the west side was 122½ feet#tn Heb “seventy cubits” (36.75 meters). wide; the wall of the building was 8¾ feet#tn Heb “five cubits” (i.e., 2.625 meters). all around, and its length 157½ feet.#tn Heb “ninety cubits” (i.e., 47.25 meters).
13 Then he measured the temple as 175 feet#tn Heb “one hundred cubits” (i.e., 52.5 meters). long, the courtyard of the temple and the building and its walls as 175 feet#tn Heb “one hundred cubits” (i.e., 52.5 meters). long, 14 and also the width of the front of the temple and the courtyard on the east as 175 feet.#tn Heb “one hundred cubits” (i.e., 52.5 meters).
15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, with its galleries on either side as 175 feet.#tn Heb “one hundred cubits” (i.e., 52.5 meters).
The interior of the outer sanctuary and the porch of the court,#tc Some Hebrew mss read “and its outer court.” 16 as well as the thresholds, narrow windows and galleries all around on three sides facing the threshold were paneled with wood all around, from the ground up to the windows (now the windows were covered), 17 to the space above the entrance, to the inner room, and on the outside, and on all the walls in the inner room and outside, by measurement.#tc The LXX does not have the word “by measurements.” The word may be a technical term referring to carpentry technique, the exact meaning of which is unclear. 18 It was made with cherubim and decorative palm trees, with a palm tree between each cherub. Each cherub had two faces: 19 a human face toward the palm tree on one side and a lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved on the whole temple all around; 20 from the ground to the area above the entrance, cherubim and decorative palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary. 21 The doorposts of the outer sanctuary were square. In front of the sanctuary one doorpost looked just like the other. 22 The altar was of wood, 5¼ feet#tn Heb “three cubits” (i.e., 1.575 meters). high, with its length 3½ feet;#tn Heb “two cubits” (i.e., 1.05 meters). its corners, its length,#tc So the Masoretic text. The LXX reads “base.” and its walls were of wood. He said to me, “This is the table that is before the Lord.” 23 The outer sanctuary and the inner sanctuary each had a double door. 24 Each of the doors had two leaves, two swinging#tn Heb “turning” leaves. leaves; two leaves for one door and two leaves for the other. 25 On the doors of the outer sanctuary were carved cherubim and palm trees, like those carved on the walls, and there was a canopy#tn Or “railings.” See L. C. Allen, Ezekiel (WBC), 2:218. of wood on the front of the outside porch. 26 There were narrow windows and decorative palm trees on either side of the side walls of the porch; this is what the side chambers of the temple and the canopies were like.

Inside the Temple

3And he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the side pillars at the entrance to be two cubits wide.#41:3 2 (long) cubits is approximately 3.5 feet or 1.1 meters. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the walls on each side were seven cubits wide.#41:3 7 (long) cubits is approximately 12.25 feet or 3.7 meters. 4Then he measured the room adjacent to the inner sanctuary#41:4 Or the length of the inner sanctuary to be twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.#41:4 The room was approximately 35 feet long and 35 feet wide (10.7 meters long and 10.7 meters wide). And he said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.#41:4 Or the Holy of Holies”
Outside the Temple
5Next he measured the wall of the temple to be six cubits thick, and the width of each side room around the temple was four cubits.#41:5 4 (long) cubits is approximately 7 feet or 2.1 meters. 6The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself. 7The side rooms surrounding the temple widened at each successive level, because the structure surrounding the temple ascended by stages corresponding to the narrowing of the temple wall as it rose upward. And so a stairway went up from the lowest story to the highest, through the middle one.
8I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the full length of a rod, six long cubits. 9The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick, and the open area between the side rooms of the temple 10and the outer chambers was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11The side rooms opened into this area, with one entrance on the north and another on the south. The open area was five cubits wide all around.
12Now the building that faced the temple courtyard on the west was seventy cubits wide,#41:12 70 (long) cubits is approximately 122.5 feet or 37.3 meters. and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, with a length of ninety cubits.#41:12 90 (long) cubits is approximately 157.5 feet or 48 meters.
13Then he measured the temple to be a hundred cubits long,#41:13 100 (long) cubits is approximately 175 feet or 53.3 meters; similarly in verses 14 and 15. and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.
The Interior Structures
15Next he measured the length of the building facing the temple courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries on each side; it was a hundred cubits. The outer sanctuary, the inner sanctuary, and the porticoes facing the court, 16as well as the thresholds and the beveled windows and the galleries all around with their three levels opposite the threshold, were overlaid with wood on all sides. They were paneled from the ground to the windows, and the windows were covered.
17In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary on all the walls, spaced evenly around the inner and outer sanctuary, 18were alternating carved cherubim and palm trees. Each cherub had two faces: 19the face of a man was toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion was toward the palm tree on the other side. They were carved all the way around the temple. 20Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the outer sanctuary from the floor to the space above the entrance.
21The outer sanctuary had a rectangular doorframe, and the doorframe of the sanctuary was similar.
22There was an altar of wood three cubits high and two cubits square.#41:22 Or long; the altar was approximately 5.25 feet high and 3.5 feet square (1.6 meters high and 1.1 meters square) Its corners, base, and sides were of wood. And the man told me, “This is the table that is before the Lord.”
23Both the outer sanctuary and the inner sanctuary had double doors, 24and each door had two swinging panels. There were two panels for one door and two for the other. 25Cherubim and palm trees like those on the walls were carved on the doors of the outer sanctuary, and there was a wooden canopy outside, on the front of the portico. 26There were beveled windows and palm trees on the sidewalls of the portico. The side rooms of the temple also had canopies.
