Psalms 72
72
A Prayer for the King
Of Solomon.
1God, give the king your good judgment
and the king’s son your goodness.
2Help him judge your people fairly
and decide what is right for the poor.
3Let there be peace on the mountains
and goodness on the hills for the people.
4Help him be fair to the poor
and save the needy
and punish those who hurt them.
5May they respect you as long as the sun shines
and as long as the moon glows.
6Let him be like rain on the grass,
like showers that water the earth.
7Let goodness be plentiful while he lives.
Let peace continue as long as there is a moon.
8Let his kingdom go from sea to sea,
and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
9Let the people of the desert bow down to him,
and make his enemies lick the dust.
10Let the kings of Tarshish and the faraway lands
bring him gifts.
Let the kings of Sheba and Seba
bring their presents to him.
11Let all kings bow down to him
and all nations serve him.
12He will help the poor when they cry out
and will save the needy when no one else will help.
13He will be kind to the weak and poor,
and he will save their lives.
14He will save them from cruel people who try to hurt them,
because their lives are precious to him.
15Long live the king!
Let him receive gold from Sheba.
Let people always pray for him
and bless him all day long.
16Let the fields grow plenty of grain
and the hills be covered with crops.
Let the land be as fertile as Lebanon,
and let the cities grow like the grass in a field.
17Let the king be famous forever;
let him be remembered as long as the sun shines.
Let the nations be blessed because of him,
and may they all bless him.
18Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does such miracles.
19Praise his glorious name forever.
Let his glory fill the whole world.
Amen and amen.
20This ends the prayers of David son of Jesse.

72
A Psalm of Solomon.
1Give the king Your justice, O God,
and Your righteousness to the king’s son!
2May he judge Your people with righteousness # Isa 9:7; 32:1
and Your poor with justice.
3May the mountains bring peace to the people, # Isa 52:7
and the hills, in righteousness.
4May he vindicate the afflicted of the people,
save the children of the needy, # Isa 11:4
and crush the oppressor.
5May they fear You while the sun endures
and as long as the moon shines, throughout all generations. # Ps 72:17; 89:36–37
6May he descend like rain upon the mown grass,
like showers that water the earth. # Dt 32:2; Hos 6:3
7In his days may the righteous flourish # Ps 92:12; Isa 2:4
and peace abound, until the moon is no more.
8May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. # Ex 23:31; Zec 9:10
9May those who dwell in the wilderness bow before him,
and his enemies lick the dust. # Isa 49:23; Mic 7:17
10May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles
bring gifts;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba
render tribute. # 1Ki 10:1; Ps 68:29
11May all kings bow down before him,
all nations serve him. # Ps 86:9
12For he will deliver the needy when he cries,
the poor also, # Ps 72:4 and him who has no helper. # Job 29:12
13He will have compassion on the poor and needy,
and will save the lives of the needy.
14He will redeem their life from oppression and violence,
and precious shall be their blood in his sight. # Ps 116:15
15So may he live,
and may the gold of Sheba be given to him.
May prayer also be made for him continually,
and blessings invoked for him all day long.
16May there be an abundance of grain in the land;
may it wave on the tops of the mountains;
may its fruit be like Lebanon;
and may those from the city flourish like grass of the earth.
17May his name endure forever; # Ps 89:36
may his name continue as long as the sun shines.
And may men be blessed in him;
and may all nations call him blessed! # Ge 12:3; 22:18
18Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, # Ps 41:13
who alone does wondrous things. # Ex 15:11
19And blessed be His glorious name forever; # Ne 9:5
and may the whole earth be filled with His glory. # Nu 14:21
Amen and Amen.
20The prayers of David, the son of Jesse, are ended. # 2Sa 23:1
