Psalms 71
71
An Old Person’s Prayer
1In you, Lord, is my protection.
Never let me be ashamed.
2Because you do what is right, save and rescue me;
listen to me and save me.
3Be my place of safety
where I can always come.
Give the command to save me,
because you are my rock and my strong, walled city.
4My God, save me from the power of the wicked
and from the hold of evil and cruel people.
5Lord, you are my hope.
Lord, I have trusted you since I was young.
6I have depended on you since I was born;
you helped me even on the day of my birth.
I will always praise you.
7I am an example to many people,
because you are my strong protection.
8I am always praising you;
all day long I honor you.
9Do not reject me when I am old;
do not leave me when my strength is gone.
10My enemies make plans against me,
and they meet together to kill me.
11They say, “God has left him.
Go after him and take him,
because no one will save him.”
12God, don’t be far off.
My God, hurry to help me.
13Let those who accuse me
be ashamed and destroyed.
Let those who are trying to hurt me
be covered with shame and disgrace.
14But I will always have hope
and will praise you more and more.
15I will tell how you do what is right.
I will tell about your salvation all day long,
even though it is more than I can tell.
16I will come and tell about your powerful works, Lord God.
I will remind people that only you do what is right.
17God, you have taught me since I was young.
To this day I tell about the miracles you do.
18Even though I am old and gray,
do not leave me, God.
I will tell the children about your power;
I will tell those who live after me about your might.
19God, your justice reaches to the skies.
You have done great things;
God, there is no one like you.
20You have given me many troubles and bad times,
but you will give me life again.
When I am almost dead,
you will keep me alive.
21You will make me greater than ever,
and you will comfort me again.
22I will praise you with the harp.
I trust you, my God.
I will sing to you with the lyre,
Holy One of Israel.
23I will shout for joy when I sing praises to you.
You have saved me.
24I will tell about your justice all day long.
And those who want to hurt me
will be ashamed and disgraced.

Psalms 71
71
Ps 31:1–4
1In You, O Lord, I seek refuge;
may I never be put to shame.
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 Deliver me in Your righteousness and help me escape;
incline Your ear to me and save me.
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 Be my rock of refuge
to enter continually;
You have given commandment to saveme;
for You are my rock and my stronghold.
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
out of the hand of the unjust and cruel man.
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 For You are my hope, O Lord God;
You are my confidence from my youth.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 On You I have supported myself from the womb;
You took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise will continually be about You.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 I am like a wondrous sign to many;
You are my strong refuge.
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 My mouth will be filled with Your praise
and with Your glory all the day.
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
do not forsake me when my strength fails.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 For my enemies speak against me;
and those who watch for my life take counsel together,
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 saying, “God has forsaken him;
pursue and catch him,
for there is none to deliver him.”
12O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, act quickly to help me.
13May the adversaries of my life be ashamed and confused;
may those who seek my harm
be enveloped in scorn and dishonor.
14But I will hope continually,
and will add to all Your praise.
15My mouth will declare Your righteousness
and Your salvation all the day,
for I cannot know their numbers.
16I will go in the strength of the Lord God;
I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.
17O God, You have taught me from my youth;
and until now I have proclaimed Your wondrous works.
18Now also when I am old and gray,
O God, do not forsake me,
until I have proclaimed Your strength to this generation,
and Your power to everyone who is to come.
19Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heights;
You have done great deeds;
O God, who is like You?
20You who have shown me great distresses and troubles
will revive me again,
and will bring me up again
from the depths of the earth.
21You will increase my greatness,
and You will encircle and comfort me.
22I will give You thanks with the harp,
even Your truth, O my God;
to You I will sing with the lyre,
O Holy One of Israel.
23My lips will rejoice
when I sing to You,
and my soul, which You have redeemed.
24My tongue also will speak of Your righteousness
all the day long;
for those who seek my harm are ashamed,
for they have been put to shame.
