“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and in addition, even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me is not able to be My disciple.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce all that he himself possesses cannot be My disciple.

For which of you, intending to construct a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the expense whether he has sufficient means to carry through to completion. Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is not able to complete it, all those who see it will begin to deride him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to complete it.

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, then you will be blessed, because they do not have the means to repay you, for it will be repaid to you at the resurrection of the righteous.”
