Die Here het vir Abram gesê: “Jy moet uit jou land gaan, weg van jou familie en van jou pa se huisgesin. Ek sal jou wys na watter land jy moet gaan. “Ek sal jou seën, en jou nageslag sal 'n groot volk word. Ek sal jou naam belangrik maak, en mense sal jou naam gebruik om ander mense te seën. As iemand jou seën, dan sal Ek hom ook seën, en as iemand jou vervloek, dan sal Ek hom ook vervloek. Al die mense van die aarde sal jou naam gebruik om te bid dat Ek hulle moet seën soos Ek jou geseën het.” Abram het toe weggegaan soos die Here vir hom gesê het. Lot het saam met hom gegaan. Abram was 75 jaar oud toe hy uit Haran weggegaan het. Abram het sy vrou Sarai, sy broer se seun Lot en al hulle goed saamgeneem. Hy het ook al die slawe geneem wat hulle in Haran gehad het. Hulle het weggegaan na die land Kanaän. Toe hulle in Kanaän kom, het Abram deur die land getrek tot by die gewyde plek van Sigem, dit is die boom van die mense wat dink hulle weet wat ander mense nie kan weet nie. In daardie tyd het die Kanaäniete in die land gewoon. Die Here het aan Abram verskyn en vir hom gesê: “Ek gee hierdie land vir jou nageslag.” Abram het daar 'n altaar gebou vir die Here wat aan hom verskyn het.
