The Major Prophets

Isaiah prophesied during a pivotal point in Israel's history. Because of their sin, God sent Babylon to judge Israel. But Isaiah's ministry held out hope that God would save them through judgement. Isaiah told Israel that she needed to trust God more than she trusted false gods and other kingdoms. Though Israel refused to heed Isaiah's warning, God still chose to save her. And God saved Israel, not through judging them, but by the suffering and judgment Jesus experienced on the cross.

The Book of Isaiah

God and Israel's relationship began like a marriage. God vowed to be faithful, and Israel promised to be lovingly his. But Israel repeatedly broke her marriage vows. She sacrificed to false gods; she even killed her own children in their rituals. Jeremiah called Israel a whore for this idolatry. When Israel worshiped other gods she was really committing adultery and Jeremiah begged for her to return and repent. But Israel wouldn't listen, she chose to break her vows and her covenant with God. But God promised that he would be a faithful husband to his adulterous bride. In Jesus, he would begin a new covenant that would transform his people from adulterous whores and make them virgin brides once again.

The Book of Jeremiah

 Lamentations is like a eulogy. But instead of mourning a loved one's passing, this book laments over the death of Israel and her temple. The mourners admit they are responsible for Israel's demise and they grieve the possibility that they have been utterly rejected by God. But in the middle of their grief, there is a message of hope–God's mercies are new every morning!

The Book of Lamentations

The book of Ezekiel wrestles with the exile of God's people into Assyria and the departure of God's presence from the temple. Eventually, the temple will be destroyed, and it's Ezekiel's job to explain why. While the people of Israel were quick to assume God abandoned his people and that their enemies overpowered him, they're wrong. Ezekiel says both Israel's exile and the temple's destruction were God's doing. God was punishing Israel for their sins. But Ezekiel also prophecies about a future hope where God would return Israel to her land, give her a new heart, and live with her forever. The good news is that the hope that Ezekiel prophesied has come true in Jesus!

The Book of Ezekiel

Watch our Introduction video on the book of Daniel, which outlines the book's main theme and how it is fulfilled in Jesus. Despite what it looks like, God is in control. The Book of Daniel gives us a unique insight into how God's rule relates to earthly governments, armies, and rulers. Even when it looks like the nations of this world surely must be working against the divine plan, Daniel shows us that God is still reigning on the highest throne. The famous stories of the Daniel diet, the fiery furnace, and the lion's den all emphasize the fact that God is in control even when it doesn't look like it. The second half of Daniel's book carries the theme in a different way - through visions. God shows Daniel that he will set up a final, eternal kingdom that will shatter all other would be kingdoms. And this eternal kingdom would be inaugurated and ruled by the Son of Man. This is who Jesus claimed to be - the Son of Man who sits on God's throne over every other kingdom and power. Yet, he did not take that throne through violence, like the kings in Daniel's day. He took the throne by going to a cross.
