# Unlock Your Faith Future #### Author: Kim Proffer > Acts 19:18—And many who had become believers came confessing and disclosing their practices. It is important to remember becoming a believer in Christ isn’t a final destination—it’s only the starting place in a progressive journey of growth. Prayer and fasting help focus our thoughts on Jesus and what His plans are for us. It is valuable to help us get closer to Him and learn to hear His voice. But an important key that unlocks the chains of our past is confession. From the pages of Texas history comes the story of Sam Houston. His illustrious career included being the one-time governor of Tennessee, a U.S. representative and senator, governor of Texas, and even the first president of the Texas Republic. He was the one who coined the phrase, “Remember the Alamo!” But Houston was also known as being a heavy drinker and a dirty-mouth cusser. In 1854, Houston trusted Christ and was baptized, but he still had some of his old tendencies. One day, as he rode along a trail, his horse stumbled. Houston cursed, reverting to his old habit. Immediately, he was convicted of his sin, got off his horse, knelt down on the trail, and cried out in confession to God for forgiveness. It was Houston’s new relationship with Christ that helped him recognize the areas of his life that still needed changing. None of us are perfect in our Christian walk, but God can use someone who is willing to break with sin and the person they used to be. Confession is not just saying, “I’m sorry.” It is admitting, “I did it. And I don’t want to do it anymore.” We can’t just give God a part of our lives while keeping part for ourselves. With God, it is all or nothing. Giving our all to God means accepting Him completely, knowing that He is in charge and capable of changing who we once were. Total abandonment is our faith declaring we have a Creator who orders all things for our good and His glory. Acts 19 tells us many who had previously believed in Christ now came to Him confessing their sins. Sorcery, magic, and superstition were widespread in Ephesus. Instead of continuing secretly in their practices, they declared what they were doing was wrong and immediately burned their books of magic and calculated how much money they had spent on sin. Verse 20 says, “In this way, the word of the Lord spread and prevailed.” When others see the transformation made in our lives, it causes them to consider the truth of God’s existence and what He can do for them. Many think they have to be perfect before coming to Christ. Some believe they can’t be saved if they can’t live perfectly. God invites you to believe in Him first. Then, allow Him to change you as you grow. Transformation begins with full disclosure. During your time with God today, ask Him to reveal the things you need to change. Ask His forgiveness and let Him free you from your past. ## Reflection What part of your life would you like to change?
