Let’s face it - life can be confusing! Wouldn’t it be nice to know where to find a spark of hope – a ray of light? Thankfully, God has a plan so that what we journey through can be illuminated by the radiance of His glory. Explore that plan with us in this devotional through the first two chapters of Hebrews.

Over the next 15 days, read through John’s letter to the church in 1 John alongside explanatory passages adapted from ESV Expository Commentary: Hebrews–Revelation (Volume 12).

The Christian life is a long race. But we’re not running on our own. Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us that we are surrounded by “a great cloud of witnesses” to spur us on. Two thousand years from when this was written, the cloud of witnesses is larger than ever. This plan is an opportunity to be encouraged by voices of the past to fix our gaze on Jesus.

Based on Hebrews 12, this plan compares running a literal race with the spiritual race that is “set before us.” It discusses the training disciplines, challenges, and what winning looks like based on Who set the race according to Ephesians 2:10.

This plan is intended as a guide to discovering the message of Hebrews for yourself! Grab a notebook to jot down your thoughts as you are led through a process of: (1) observing the text of Hebrews; (2) interpreting the original message to its first readers; and (3) applying the letter’s timeless truths to your life today.

This plan is a challenge to run the “race set before us” mentioned in Hebrews 12:1 in a way that will cause the fearful crowd in this world who are watching us to notice a difference in our lives. We will use 5 direct quotes from Jesus in Luke chapter 12 to guide our discussions and draw out our thoughts in these uncertain and often troubling times.

This will be a general and scriptural study focusing on the gifts of the Spirit that are given to Christ-followers to help us as we run The Race Set Before Us as mentioned in Hebrews 12:1. It is scriptural without being doctrinaire and offered to encourage a deeper walk and provide a basis for continuing study.

We will continue our discussion comparing our lives as Christ-followers who are running “the race that is set before us” in Hebrews 12:1 with characteristics of running a physical race. In this study we will compare the “weights” we are urged to “lay aside” with hurdles we must clear to run our best race. There are five of them.

This plan will explore what the letter of Hebrews can teach us in four different areas. 1) WHO GOD IS: God’s character and nature 2) WHO WE ARE: the identity of humanity and/or followers of Jesus 3) WHAT WE BELIEVE: core Christian doctrines 4) HOW WE LIVE: putting faith into action
