Healing While You Walk
Luke 17:11–19 ~ On the way to Jerusalem, he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.
The ten lepers stood at a distance. They were unclean, cut off, and desperate for healing. When they cried out to Jesus, he gave them a strange command. He told them to go show themselves to the priests. At that moment, they still had the disease. Yet as they went, they were healed.
This story gives a picture of life with anxiety. You often want healing before you move. You want calm before you obey. You want complete peace before you take the next step. But God often works the other way. He calls you to walk in trust even as the struggle remains sharp.
"Walking by faith" is not a vague idea. It means you act as if God is telling the truth, even when your feelings may disagree. The lepers turned their bodies in the direction of obedience while their skin still showed the marks of sickness. Many believers are called to turn their lives toward obedience while their hearts still race.
What might this look like for you? It might mean attending church even when you fear being around others. It might mean making the hard phone call, applying for the job, or having the needed conversation while your mind buzzes with "what ifs." It might mean opening your Bible when you would rather scroll.
This is not pretending you feel fine. It is trusting that Christ is with you while you tremble. The lepers did not heal themselves by walking. Jesus healed them on the way. In the same way, your steps of obedience do not earn grace. They are responses to the grace already given in the gospel.
In Christ, you are already clean in the most profound sense. Your guilt has been removed. Your record has been washed. The cross stands as proof that God has moved toward you in love. The empty tomb stands as proof that he has power over death, fear, and every enemy.
Sometimes Jesus gives quick relief. Many times, He provides slow growth. Jesus may not change your feelings right away. But He does promise to be with you, to use your trials for your good, and to complete the work He began in you.
One of the lepers, when he saw that he was healed, turned back to give thanks and praise. As God meets you along the road, do not forget to return in gratitude. Remember the small steps where He gave strength you did not think you had.
You may feel weak, but you are not stuck. God calls you to keep walking. Step by step. Day by day. Obedience in weakness is still obedience.
Reflection Questions:
- Where are you waiting to "feel better" before you obey something God has made clear?
- What is one small step of obedience you can take this week, even while you still feel anxious?
- How does the story of the ten lepers shape the way you view slow, on-the-way change?
- Where have you seen God meet you in past steps of obedience, and have you thanked him for it?
