In his second letter, Peter challenged the church to pursue knowledge of God’s Word. If you know the truth, you’ll be able to spot errors. He urged them to simultaneously “be on guard” and “grow in grace.” Peter couldn’t stress enough how important it is for believers to grow in our understanding of God and His Word. Following his first letter, Apostle Peter must have received reports of false teachers and backsliders who indulged in sin and scoffed at Jesus’s second coming. He then writes this letter to strengthen believers in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, calling them to escape from worldly corruption and to grow in the qualities of faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection and love.

Shortly after writing his first letter, Peter hears word of false teaching spreading amongst the churches in Asia Minor. The letter focuses on combating false teachers and encouraging believers to grow in spiritual maturity by studying the Scriptures. Second Peter reminds us to be diligent in confirming our calling by cultivating Christ-likeness in all aspects of our lives.
