This 16th installment of our Reading with the People of God plan invites you into the voices of the Minor Prophets—Hosea through Nahum—calling God’s people to return with sincerity and trust. Paired with the Gospel of Mark, we’ll hear Christ’s invitation to repentance and renewed faith. Written by the shepherd-prophet Amos, this book exposes Israel's sinful religious hypocrisy and corrupt leadership. Amos prophesies against their rejection of God's law and the terrible social injustice perpetrated against the poor and vulnerable. As Amos foretells judgment on many nations, including Israel, we are reminded of the ultimate need for restoration and the promise of greater redemption. 

Justice: A Study in Amos

God sent Amos, a southern peasant, to prophesy to the prosperous yet unscrupulous northern kingdom. Instead of being God’s chosen people to bless others, Israel embraced injustice, hypocrisy, and materialism. As a result of God’s judgment, the nation perished during the Assyrian invasion in the late 8th century. The book’s message is straightforward: Christians are chosen not only for the privilege but also for the responsibility to bless the needy.

Amos, an Unlikely Prophet

Amos is often called a prophet of doom. When you begin to read his prophecy, it doesn’t take long to realize that nickname fits. On the surface, his prophecy doesn’t sound like a happy formula for the good life. However, every condemnation he gives serves as an invitation, a cry for us to “seek God and live” (Amos 5:4). This kind of living will bring us peace and true prosperity.
