The Spirit Promised to the Church

DAY 6 OF 14

The Holy Spirit Is a Person!

While we have already established that the Holy Spirit is God, I now want us to understand that He is also a person.

When Jesus referred to Him, He used the Greek pronoun “ekeinos,” which is used only for people. If He had been referring to a mere spirit, a wind, a fire, or a dove, He would have used a different pronoun. Jesus did not speak of “it” or “that thing," but of “He.”

Let’s now examine some aspects that confirm for us that the Holy Spirit is a person. We know this because He has intellect. He knows the deep things of God that no one else knows as well as the deep things of man, such a depth that sometimes we don’t even know how to pray. But He, who knows all things, helps us.

We read this in 1 Corinthians 2:11:

“For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man that is in him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

The Holy Spirit helps us to pray and intercedes for us (Romans 8:26). He is also called the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge (Isaiah 11:2). So, if He were just a force, a wind, or a fire, He would not have the capacity to think.

About this Plan

The Spirit Promised to the Church

Today we can say that the Church of Jesus Christ is of one mind regarding the Holy Spirit; we all know that He is God. Throughout this Bible study plan, we will learn a little more about the person of the Holy Spirit, His attributes, and His mission while answering three questions: If the Holy Spirit is God, why don't you worship Him as God? If the Holy Spirit is a person, why don't you speak to Him? If the Holy Spirit is the leader of the church, where have you placed Him?
