A Believer in the Music Industry... Is That Possible?Sýnishorn

“Music that is not focussed on God, keeps you away from God.” On one hand, I believe there is truth in this. On the other hand, I personally believe things are not that black-and-white. Because how about songs about climate change, politics or slavery? Do these songs keep you away from God as well?

Still through the ages, one of the biggest themes of songs is: love. Also in the Bible, if you look at the Psalms for example. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the image of ‘love’ is clouded, and has been over-erotized. Lots of love songs nowadays describe a love - sometimes combined with some inappropriate language - that is not the way God intended it to be.

As a christian, can you listen, play or sing along with these songs?

Musician or not, at work we all get in touch with things we might not fully support. Maybe you work for a commercial company whose goal is to make money. Perhaps you work at a school and you cannot support their point of view about sexual identity. Or maybe there are inappropriate lyrics that you don’t support as a musician or singer. Do you have to quit your job then? Or were you particularly called to be at that place to make a difference?

And, looking at the bigger picture, how does something (small) relate to the end goal of a company or act? How about the empty goal of making money at commercial companies? Should christians be working there?

Or maybe you take a bigger offense when it comes to inappropriate language. And that is okay, as long as you know that it does not decide your salvation. Neither does it decide a personal love for Jesus.

I’m not asking you to pick a side. I’d rather inspire you to take a look at your heart. Are you too judgemental? Or, as a musician, do you need to find more balance in what to do and what not? Whatever it is, maybe Psalm 139 can help you pray for more peace and balance in your life. ⚖️
