Rejoice in what is to come

Jesus said: “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.” (John 8:56 ESV)

Abraham is often called “the father of all believers.” He lived several thousand years ago, but is still an example to us because of his trust in God.

Since Abraham lived so long ago, he did not literally see many of God's promises fulfilled.

He did not witness his family grow into a great nation. He did not see them settled in the land of Canaan. He died long before Jesus Christ was born to bring salvation to all nations. And yet Jesus says, “He saw My day and was glad.”

To understand that, we must also read Hebrews 11. In this chapter, many believers from history are mentioned, concluding, “These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar.” (Hebrews 11:13 ESV)

As a believer, you can find deep joy in God's promises, even if they have not yet fully materialized. By faith you look beyond the visible and already see the light breaking through in the darkness — even if others around you do not yet see it.
