May Devotional

DAY 1 OF 31

May 1 - What are the Scriptures?

The Scriptures are not merely religious writings or historical records preserved for moral instruction. They are the inspired Word of God, meaning they originate from God Himself, though written through human authors. This makes the Bible distinct from every other book. It is divine in origin, authoritative in nature, and intentional in its message. When we speak of “Scripture,” we are speaking of God communicating His mind, His will, and His purposes to humanity in a written and preserved form.

The importance of the Scriptures lies in what they accomplish in the life of the believer. They establish doctrine, correct error, expose wrong thinking, and train a person to live rightly. The Word of God is not passive information; it is active instruction. It shapes perspective, aligns decisions, and builds spiritual maturity. A believer who engages Scripture consistently will not remain the same because the Word works on the mind, the heart, and the conduct of the individual.

However, when the Scriptures are neglected, misunderstood, or treated casually, the result is instability. People begin to form opinions without truth, hold convictions without foundation, and practice beliefs that are not rooted in God. This is how confusion grows even in spiritual spaces. Without a clear understanding of what Scripture truly is, it becomes easy to either ignore it or misuse it. And once that happens, growth becomes difficult, and error becomes normal.

DAILY EXERCISE
Read all the Scriptures, slowly.
Write down:

  • What the Scripture is
  • What the Scripture does

Then personalise it by stating how you will begin to engage the Word more intentionally this month.

PRAYER
Father, help me to recognise Your Word for what it truly is. Give me a heart that honours the Scriptures and a mind that is ready to receive truth. Let Your Word shape my thinking, correct my errors, and guide my decisions daily. I pray for students, families, leaders, and believers across Nigeria that there will be a renewed hunger for Your Word and that confusion will give way to clarity through the truth of Scripture. Lord, we lift nations before You. Let Your Word find expression across continents, breaking ignorance and establishing truth. Strengthen the Church worldwide to stand firmly on the authority of Scripture. Let this generation, across every age group, return to Your Word with sincerity, and let light shine where there has been darkness.

CONFESSION
I honour and understand the Scriptures. God’s Word shapes my thoughts, directs my life, and establishes me in truth.

READING BIBLE PLAN (RBP):
Day 1: Matthew 1–3
Look out for: God’s faithfulness to His promises; Jesus’ lineage; John the Baptist preparing the way.

About this Plan

May Devotional

This devotional is a structured journey into understanding and living by the Scriptures, its authority, reliability, and its central message on Christ. It also explores the purpose of the Scripture as a guide for doctrine, correction, and spiritual growth. This is a call for practical application, and an encouragement to actively reflect God’s Word in our daily decisions and actions.
