Recap...
- Last week we saw what a difference has been wrought in the lives of the saints by the great mercy of God.

- This week we will see that we were not just dead in our trespasses and sins, following the devil, following the passions of our flesh and the desires of our body and mind… we were Separated, alienated, strangers without a hope in the world.
- Christ brought us near, set us at peace with God and with one another.
- He gave us access to the Father, transported us into the household of the Lord, and made us all together into a holy temple.
I. Christ brought us near. 11-13

Paul was writing to a gentile audience… like us.
- Uncircumcision made them “strangers to the covenants of promise.” They were dead to God and God was dead to them.

Yet... "You have been brought near by the blood of Christ."

WE were separated… WE were strangers… WE were alienated… and WE were brought near ONLY by the blood of Christ.
II. Christ became our peace. 14-16

“Hostility” came into the world through Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden.
- Hostility between man and God.
- Hostility between man and nature.
- Hostility among mankind

What God promised and what the world longed for was peace.
- A peace that would replace hostility as the dominating agent of our lives.

Jesus came and “abolished the law of the commandments expressed in the ordinances” that is the ceremonial laws of uncleanliness and separation.
- By abolishing the commandments expressed in the ordinances… he removed the hostility.
- The hostility between God and man… and the hostility among mankind.

God didn’t just make this peace available to His people… he made it available even to the gentiles… thus becoming the peace of all people.
Jesus is our peace… He is our reconciliation to God and He is our reconciliation to one another.

If Jesus is able to reconcile dead sinners, servants of satan, strangers and aliens to a holy God…
-What is it to him to be able to reconcile us to one another.
III. Christ gave us access to the father. 17-18

The phrase "We are all children of God." is not true.
- We are given the right to be called children of God only by receiving Christ.
The reason why we are able to worship the Father is because we have an invitation to come worship him and power to do so through the Holy Spirit.

We can pray to the Father, is because Jesus laid out the path for us to do so by the shedding of his blood and His gift of the Holy Spirit.

David expressed his excitement over this fact...
IV. Christ made us a part of the household of God. 19-21

In Eph 1:22 we see "The household of God" as a new metaphor of the church.
- It literally translates to “Family members”.

There was a time when only the Jews were considered part of God’s family through the sign of the covenant, which was circumcision.
- Now the law of the commandments expressed in the ordinances has been abolished.
- NOW all people from every nation who will just repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ can become members of God’s household!
The prophetic announcements and the Apostles explanation of how Jesus fulfilled those prophecies IS the foundation of the Church.
- Jesus is the CORNERSTONE, and the foundation is laid AROUND him.
- It is IN him that the whole structure grows and is joined together.

If we start deleting or ignoring these teachings… we lose our faith.
If we lose our faith we lose the church.
- It is our faith in Christ who is testified of by the apostles that makes us one.
V. Christ made us together into a temple. 22

We are being built together into a temple... a suitable dwelling place for God.
- Solomon’s temple, the new temple built by the returning exiles, the temple built by Herod... all these are GONE.
- God is building a suitable dwelling place out of His people… not just the Jews… BUT HIS PEOPLE FROM ALL NATIONS.
Recap...

You were dead in your trespasses
You were following the devil
You were carrying out the passions of your flesh
You were children of wrath
You were loved by God
You are alive
You are saved
You are raised up
You have received confident belief (faith) as a gift from God.
You have been recreated in Christ

Christ brought us near
Christ became our peace
Christ gave us access to the father
Christ made us a part of the household of God
Christ made us together into a temple.
God is working in us to “build” us into who he wants us to be.
- If we are indeed saved, then the Holy Spirit will work in us.

The word of God is powerful and God will grow us all individually though its study.
