I. From Christ we inherit- the title of saint 1-4

The letter is addressed to the “Saints” [lit. holy ones] at Ephesus
- This title was not bestowed upon them because of their “holiness,” any more than Paul’s title of apostle was bestowed on him because of his zeal for Jesus.

Paul got his title by the will of God.
- God defied Paul and asserted his will on the road to Damascus and saved him.

Believers around the world receive the title of saints, the holy ones of God, because HE CHOSE us even before the foundation of the world so that we would be holy and blameless.

Just as Paul was called apostle by the will of God… we are called saints by the will of God.
- The fact that it is by God’s will, His grace and not our merit should lead us to come together around our inherited title.
II. From Christ we inherit- Adoption as sons 5-6

God determined to make us his children.
We were adopted “to the praise of His glorious grace with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”

He adopted us just to show off his glorious grace to the world.

It is His desire to draw all people to Himself by putting His grace on display.

In love, God has adopted us and made us His children… not only that, He has made us altogether a reflection of His love… His mercy & His grace.
III. From Christ we inherit- redemption/ forgiveness 7

Redemption is the liberation we received by the blood of Christ.

Forgiveness and redemption is “according to the riches of His grace.” It is not according to works or merit in any way… it is simply the outworking of the riches of God’s grace.

We are all a bunch of prisoners who have been set free by the grace of God.

IV. From Christ we inherit- wisdom and insight into the mystery of His will. 8-10

God has lavished this wisdom and insight into the mystery of his will on all of us.
- Just thinking about, thinking about God brings about a wave of peace over us, because the ability to think about him is an outworking of his grace and mercy.

The destination of all our thoughts about God, and the destination of his will is that “in the fullness of time” all things in heaven and on earth will be united in him.
V. From Christ we inherit- a place in God’s plan 11-12

The wisdom and insight, God so richly lavishes upon us also leads us to understand that we have inherited a place in God’s plan to unite all things in Him.

We WILL be the praise of his glory… we will be his masterpiece… because we know that he has predestined us as such
VI. From Christ we inherit- the Holy Spirit. 13-14

Without the Holy Spirit it would be left to us to work out our salvation… to conform ourselves into the saints he chose us to be.
- While we are working out our salvation with fear and trembling… still making mistakes… still stumbling… not always understanding…

God is working in us through His indwelling Holy Spirit both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

The good work God began in us when we heard and believed the gospel is going to be carried on to completion.
- He has claimed us. And there is nothing that can separate us from that claim he has placed on our lives.
