Sermon Title: "Friends of God"

Sermon Title: "Friends of God"

The greatest love story ever told can be found in the pages of God’s Word. Jesus once said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John‬ ‭15:13, ESV) Jesus is that friend who gave His life for the redemption of humanity. On Sunday, March 15th, at 10:30am, in his new Easter sermon series titled, “Greater Love”, Pastor Ben Towell will be sharing the depths of God’s love and how such love can be experienced through a personal relationship with His one and only Son, Jesus Christ.

Overview: Most people know all about God. They likely have studied His book, the Bible, but do they personally know Him? Can they sincerely say, “I am a true friend of God!” True friendship is marked with love. In other words, if you care for someone, your actions will show it. A true friend is more than “lip service”. A true friend is always both selfless and sacrificial.

Directions: Today, we will examine Jesus’ model for love and friendship. We will discover “four marks” that will show us what it truly means to be “Friends of God”, and in turn, a friend to each other.
I. The command to love. (v. 12)
How does Jesus love?

1. We are friends of Jesus.
2. We are forgiven through Jesus.
3. We are fashioned after Jesus.
4. We are followers of Jesus.
II. The cost of love. (v. 13)
The cost of love:

1. Love is always selfless.
2. Love is always sacrificial.
3. Love is always sufficient.
III. The commitment to love. (v. 14-15)
A two-way commitment:

1. Jesus is committed to His disciples.
2. We are to be committed to Jesus.
IV. The choosing of love. (v. 16-17)
We have been chosen...

1. By the Lord.
2. For the Lord.
Destination: Does your life reflect that of Jesus Christ? Do people know Him by your fruit? Are you willing to lay down your life for someone else? In other words, Jesus is not only demanding that we not live for self, but we must be willing to give our life for else. This is a hard message to follow. However, it is a message from Jesus, a true mark of a believer and friend of the living God.

Reflection: Use the private notes section bellow or your personal journal to put the message of these verses into your own words so you can communicate them to others.

Your voice matters! (see Mark 16:15)
