Wreck the Roof

Wreck the Roof

Slogans are meant for identity. A good slogan becomes a mantra that reminds us of something (who they are). Thus, a Godly slogan, then, becomes a Godly mantra that reminds us of Godly truths (our identity). And that is what this series is about.

Our series is looking at different Gospel slogans that are meant to inspire and challenge us to be intentional about what God wants us to do.

This week's slogan is "Wreck the Roof". And we are going to find out that this means to be bold, to take risks, to think outside the box, maybe even doing some things in unconventional ways.
Luke 5 takes place in the small town of Capernaum, the home-town of Peter. Jesus had just healed a man from leprosy (which happened to be a big deal).

3 messianic miracles

For more information about why the healing of a leper was such a big deal, check out this website.

By verse 17, Jesus is found in a house packed with people who are there to listen him. (Some to find fault and some to follow.)
What does this story say about friendship?

You see, everyone of us wants to have friends like these... and we probably even want to be friends like these.
"When they could not find a way..."

What do you usually do when you can't find a way?
But these guys didn't give up. One of them suggested that they tear a hole in the roof (wreck the roof).
This is actually a huge step of faith. They had no idea how Jesus would respond. But they could probably guess how the crowd would respond.

What were some thoughts that they crowd might have been thinking?
As much as I want to identify as one of the friends in this story... I am most likely someone in the crowd (and so are you).

The crowd probably isn't that concerned with the needs of the person outside the house, and that’s mainly because of their experience in the house.

What does it look like to be part of the crowd today?

In contrast, what does it look like to "wreck the roof"?
"Seeing their faith..."

What does that mean?
Wrecking the Roof means that there is a sense of urgency in the message that we have been given… that Jesus will return and we do not have time to waste.

Wrecking the Roof means that we are not going to be thwarted by closed doors… but rather that we will be innovative in bringing people to Jesus.

Everyone was amazed at what happened and glorified God… because that’s what happens when people wreck the roof.

How might we wreck the roof?
