SERMON: Acts 19 “When the Word of God Prevails”

“What are the results when the Word of God prevails?”

1. God’s Purpose is Declared

2. Satan’s Kingdom is Overthrown

3. The Name of Jesus is Magnified

“When the Word of God prevails, His purpose and power is revealed.”
1. It is so easy for us to miss, but Bible scholars have pointed out that the journey mentioned with so little fanfare and attention in 18:23 leading to 19:1 was one of over 1,000 miles of extremely difficult terrain and environment. In fact, 2 Corinthians 11:26-27 details some of that journey that is essentially summarized in these two verses, 18:23 and 19:1. Review these texts and discuss these questions: What did Paul experience on his travels? What do these experiences tell us about Paul and his mission? How would you respond in similar situation?
2. It is not uncommon to have people express doubt over the reality of the “extraordinary miracles” and the evil spirit pummeling the seven sons of Sceva, believing it to be more of a folk tale or local legend. How would you respond to this “doubt”? Read the following texts and answer these questions: Luke 8:43-44; Acts 5:14-15. Why do people struggle with believing these things? Why would God permit miracles at the hand of Paul? What purpose (s) do these events serve? What do they teach us about the name of Jesus?
3. There was an incredible transformation that occurred in Ephesus as the result of the Gospel and the Word of God. Review Acts 19:18-20 and identify these changes and the impact they would have and why they were necessary. Also, share with the group what changes occurred in your life as a result of your surrender unto the Lord. Were there items that needed to be “burned”?
4. The chapter again draws our attention to “idols”, in this case the silver shrines of Artemis (v. 24). What was the result of Paul’s ‘smashing’ of these idols by the Word of God? What are idols we currently struggle with? How can they be effectively ‘demolished’, and what steps are you taking in your own life to deal with the threat of idols?
5. Review again v. 17b and discuss the implications of this verse for our own lives, for corporate worship, and for the life of the church as a whole. Read also 1 Chronicles 17:24; Psalm 115:1; John 12:28 as you respond. What is the connection between one’s zeal for the Lord their faith, their witness, and their lives?
6. Discuss how the Word of God is “prevailing” and growing in your own life. How do you use the Word of God, and what is its greatest blessing to you? How can its impact in your life be enhanced even more? Read the following passages as an affirmation to the power and authority of the Word of God: Psalm 119:105; Isaiah 40:7-8, 55:11; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Peter 1:23.
