THE MYSTERY OF
THE SCARLET THREADS
Hebrews 10:1 (KJV)
1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
1. The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.
2. One of the greatest treasures is when you discover why Jesus did some of the things He did.
John 8:6-9 (MSG)
6 They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. 7 They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, "The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone." 8 Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt. 9 Hearing that, they walked away, one after another, beginning with the oldest. The woman was left alone.
3. He did this to fulfill...
Jeremiah 17:13 (KJV)
13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
4. If he fulfilled the OT in the NT:
a. was Jesus crucified amongst three crosses
5. The answer can be found in the:
a. Mishna, a book Jewish history and J law
b. and in the Encyclopedia Judica
Leviticus 16:5 (NLT)
5 Aaron must take from the community of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
6. The goats had to be identical in age, size and color.
Leviticus 16:6 (NLT)
6 “Aaron will present his own bull as a sin offering to purify himself and his family, making them right with the LORD.
7. The high priest had to make sure he was clean before God.
Leviticus 16:7 (KJV)
7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
8. Symbolically speaking, who is the Door ? Jesus.
a. so there had to be two goats present
Leviticus 16:8 (NLT)
8 He is to cast sacred lots to determine which goat will be reserved as an offering to the LORD and which will carry the sins of the people to the wilderness of Azazel.
KJ - scapegoat
a. Azazel means scapegoat
b. he was a fallen angel
9. Two goats were to be offered as well.
Leviticus 16:9 (NLT)
9 Aaron will then present as a sin offering the goat chosen by lot for the LORD.
10. One goat would be:
a. marked to be burned at the altar for the Lord
b. they would tie a scarlet threadbetween its two horns
Leviticus 16:10 (NLT)
10 The other goat, the scapegoat chosen by lot to be sent away, will be kept alive, standing before the LORD. When it is sent away to Azazel in the wilderness, the people will be purified and made right with the LORD.
11. The other goat, the scapegoat had a scarlet thread tied around its neck.
12. They ARE NOT offering a sacrifice to satan.......
a. God told the high priest to lay hands on the goat
b. and transfer the sins of all of Israel onto the goat
13. A man then led the goat outside the east gate,
a. across a ramp ( during the Temple times )
b. and towards the Judean wilderness
14. Some commentaries read say that the goat...
a. was taken far out into the wilderness
b. and pushed off of a cliff where it died
Luke 11:24 (NLT)
24 “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But when it finds none, it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’
15. They believed that demonic spirits hang out in dry places such as the desert.
a. the idea was to get rid of the evil and sins by banishing it back to its original source
16. So far we have two red threads involved.
a. one was tied between the horns of the goat that was to be sacrificed to the Lord
17. The second red thread was tied around the neck of the scapegoat...
a. that was led into the wilderness to its death
18. The third scarlet tread was tied to the door of theTemple gate.
a. Jewish tradition records that when the goat died in the wilderness,
b. the red thread that was tied to the temple gate would turned white
19. When Israel saw this,
a. they knew that God had accepted their sacrifices
b. and all their sins had been forgiven
c. this may be why the prophet Isaiah said
Isaiah 1:18 (NLT)
18 “Come now, let’s settle this,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.
20. So we see that there were three threads used on the Day of Atonement :
21. But wait, there’s more!
Matthew 27:38 (KJV)
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
22. There were two thieves that were crucified with Jesus.
a. three men total
23. Now we begin to understand how this fulfilled the Old Testament sacrifices and the scarlet threads.
24. The first red thread that was tied around the horns of the first goat
a. would represent Jesus as sacrificial the offering for the Lord.
b. cross number one
Luke 23:39 (MSG)
39 One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: "Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!"
25. The second red thread was tied around the neck of the scapegoat,
a. which would symbolize the thief that rejected Jesus and went to hell
b. cross number two
Luke 23:42-43 (NLT)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” 43 And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
26. The third red thread that was tied to the Temple gate
a. symbolizes the thief that repented as he hung on the cross
b. he went to the cross as a scarlet thread
c. and his scarlet thread turned white when He was forgiven by Jesus
d. Who is the Door to heavens Temple
27. According to history, the red thread on the temple door never turned white again after Jesus crucifixion.
28. But the problem is that Jesus was innocent.
a. who should have really been on the middle cross
John 18:39 (MSG)
39 It's your custom that I pardon one prisoner at Passover. Do you want me to pardon the 'King of the Jews'?"
29. Did they want Jesus?
Matthew 27:16 (KJV)
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
30. But the OT required two identical goats?
a. how was that fulfilled
Matthew 27:17 (MSG)
17 With the crowd before him, Pilate said, "Which prisoner do you want me to pardon: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?"
31. Barabbas first name was identical...to Jesus!
32. Jesus died on the cross represents
a. the goat that was offered unto the Lord
33. Barabbas was released as the scapegoat and carried his sins with him.
34. He should have been on the cross.
a. but Jesus took our sins
35. If God is so meticulous in:
a. fulfilling every detail down to the very letter,
b. how much more so will you work out the details for your life
