We are continuing our study on the “Lord’s Supper”. For the last two weeks we have looked in the book of Luke at different meals Jesus was part of... most specifically looking at the Last Supper last week.
Today, we will continue our journey through the writings of Luke in what he calls “breaking bread.” I believe that in Luke's writing, this is meant to convey more than just simply a meal together.

Notice... Jesus (1) took bread; (2) he blessed it; (3) he broke it; (4) and he gave it. ... This is what it looks like when Jesus is host of the meal.
And this flow will inform the very next meal mentioned in Luke.

The next time Luke uses the understanding of “breaking bread” is in Acts 2. This is often known as the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit comes upon the disciples... they speak in tongues... 3,000 people are baptized... and this is the beginning of “the church”... Then it says...
Luke uses the idea of "breaking bread" twice in this passage.
Some understand this to reference two different things. One being the Lord's Supper and the other being simply a meal. And of course that is a possibility... But it seems that Luke has tried to be pretty intentional with what he means by "breaking bread"... and it is tied to the presence of Christ at the meal.

It is in the “breaking of bread” that Christ is remembered.
It is in the “breaking of bread” that Christ’s presence is celebrated.
It is in the “breaking of bread” that fellowship (koinonia) is experienced.
It is in the “breaking of bread” that the church is brought together.

The intentional character of “breaking bread” is obvious. The church gathered in order to break bread.
And the ties to Luke 24 (the meal in Emmaus) are pretty strong.
- First day of the Week
- Disciples gathered
- Breaking bread
- Fear followed by comfort and rejoicing
- (and of course) Resurrection

The first day of the week is the day of remembrance, the day of our deliverance, because it is the day on which God raised Jesus form the dead and created his new community, the church.
We gather on the first day to "break bread" together. That's our purpose. Everything else is bonus.
