SERMON: Acts 13 - “Resolutions Worthy of Resolve”

“What are two sure-fire ways to flourish in the New Year?”

1. Resolve to Take Notice of the Holy Spirit

2. Resolve to Know & Receive the Word of God

“God always works through His Word and through His Spirit. Will 2020 be a year of His work in you?”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. Have you ever had a quality leader or coworker move on to a new work? This is exactly what happened in Antioch with Saul and Barnabas (vv. 1-3). Reflect upon your own experience, and share with the group responses to these questions: How did you feel? What has happened as a result? Did this change or move cause the world shut down, or did the work carry on? What lessons can we learn from this?
2. The Holy Spirit much desires to “thrust” out laborers. You might not be “thrust” in the same distinguishing manner as Saul and Barnabas, but you nonetheless are called to serve Him. How do you see this occurring at the present?
3. Bible commentators have noted that in many ways the church at Antioch could be described as a “model church.” As you read about the church of Antioch, what are some of its distinguishing characteristics and what would make for its description of a model church? Are these qualities present in our own church family?
4. Review Paul’s preaching (v. 16ff.). This is his first recorded message in Acts, and since he is addressing a Jewish synagogue, Paul supports his argument with Old Testament texts. Review the following Old Testament passages and discuss what argument or point they support. 2 Samuel 7:12-17; Psalm 2:7, 16:10; Isaiah 55:3; Habakkuk 1:5. What items does he emphasize, and why? What does this illustrate for us in regards to our teaching?
5. Review v. 43. What is it to “continue in the grace of God?” and why is this so critical? How are you doing so today?
6. Why is it we are often quick to speak of the importance of worship and prayer, but rarely address the topic of fasting? Yet, as we learn in our text today, it played a most significant role in the early church and the sending forth of Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey. Review the following texts and discuss how fasting is used. 2 Chronicles 20:1-4, 14-15; Ester 4:15-16; Nehemiah 1:4. Have you fasted? What did this discipline teach you?
