Acts 2:14-36

SERMON: Acts 2:14-36 “The Spirit Speaks”

“When the Spirit speaks, a great message is the result. What makes this sermon great, and why does this concern us?”

1. Build Upon the Word

2. Keep Jesus at the Center

3. Take a Stand

“To know the great Savior is to know greatness!”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
1. Discuss as a group the “best” or “greatest” sermon you have ever heard. What made it “great”? In your review of Peter’s sermon, what qualities and/or themes do you observe in his sermon, and why do you think it had such a remarkable impact (some 3,000 being saved!)?
2. In the book of Acts we will see a close connection between the filling of the Holy Spirit and the proclamation of the Gospel. How is that connection played out in the text we studied on Sunday (2:14-36)? How do you see this connection working in your own life?
3. Review verses 22-23 of our sermon text, and discuss how Jesus’ death was not a surprise to God, or any part of the plan of salvation an afterthought or accident. Additionally, in accordance with v. 21, Jesus’ redemption is won for any who would receive it. Review the following texts and discuss how they portray these themes and the encouragement we can receive from them: Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 53:10; Mark 10:45; John 3:16; Acts 4:12; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:19.
4. In Acts 2:25–30, Peter quotes Psalm 16:8–11 (attributed to King David) and states that because David is dead, the psalm must be speaking of somebody else who is God’s “holy one.” Why would this have been controversial to Peter’s primarily Jewish audience? How do Psalm 16:8–11 and Psalm 110 both establish that Jesus is God’s unique Son?
5. Peter’s sermon is firmly founded in the Word of God and upon Jesus, and in it he displays a remarkable grasp of the Old Testament scriptures. What is the implication of this for us, and how would you “rate” your own knowledge of the Scripture? What are areas of strength or weakness in this regard, and how would you encourage a new believer to study the Word of God?
