This year’s theme is “IF” based on the scripture:

2 Chron 7:14
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. NIV

Week 1 - September 15, 2019 - Pastor Jeff Bender

We're going to start a series today entitled “Biblical Life Lessons"

It will hopefully address common situations and areas that everyone will probably deal with.

This series is going to be based on 2 Peter 1:3...
We just completed our study in 2 Peter, but this verse is going to be the catalyst for the series.

Today, we’re going to look at the 2nd part of that verse and then beginning either next week or the following, we’ll hit the first part.
That’s a pretty broad statement. What is contained in “life”? EVERYTHING

God’s word addresses most of the issues we face in life, right? We will begin by looking at what God’s word says about common things for all of us: Singleness, Marriages, children, finances, health, sex, work, church etc.

But today we’re going to look at the 2nd part.
What is godliness? Is it things we have to do in order to be saved? Or in order to stay saved? Is it what used to be called the holiness doctrine? Outward things that we do or don’t do because we are called to be holy

Basically a form of legalism.

This is what biblical godliness is: When you become a Christian, you now have a genetic nature into which you grow.

Like babies have their own genetics from their parents. One day our children will become like us. They will look like us, have the similar physical make-up, they will reflect us in the way they look.

They also pick up character traits that we have as parents. Phrases you use, inflection, whether you have empathy for others or not, your attitudes, all learned behaviors from your parents.

We all probably use phrases that our parents used that we knew we’d never use. Learned behavior. Now we have genetics from our father.

When God says that we have divine power to be godly, it simply means we will acquire the attributes of Jesus the longer we study His word. When we spend time in God’s word, we pick up his character traits like children pick up the traits of their parents.

How many here have had said to them that your children are just like you are. That they could pick your kid out of a crowd because of their looks and how they act?

Can people pick you out of a crowd because you act like Jesus?

The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to reflect our heavenly father. So that when people see us and how we act, hopefully they can get a small glimpse of Jesus in us.
One day we will be like Jesus when we leave this earth, but we shouldn’t want to wait until then to be like Jesus.
When Peter is writing this letter, he is telling them that right now, they have the ability to become like Jesus.

The Holy Spirit has given them that power and ability.
So if we are called to reflect Christ in our daily lives and to present ourselves as “godly” it’s not meant to wield a hammer and pound people down.

It’s meant to reflect how Jesus would handle any given situation. Do we react like Jesus? Do we give others a good example of Jesus? Would others want to know about Jesus through how we act?

So how do we know what Jesus would do in any given situation?
The Holy Spirit works through our knowledge of what God’s word actually says.

It's incredibly important to know God's word. We've discussed it a good amount recently.

Looking at the last part of that verse...That God called us, not because we were any bargain or prize to God.
Do we understand how awesome that really is? God called you and me because He is glorious and He is good.

In other words, we are only here today because God was good to us.

Why would he call you and me? If we are nothing but a burden to Him, why us? That is what makes this whole Christian thing so awesome.
So if God chose us strictly because He is good and we aren’t, what should we do about that?

We can’t earn it, we can’t work towards paying God back.

If we can’t do anything about what God’s done except accept it, why does he now tell us to be holy? Can’t we do what we want?
The way we live our lives, the way we hopefully reflect Jesus in how we live is how God says you can be godly.
Notice how life and godliness are tied together? You can’t have the life God wants for you unless you are godly. And the only way to be godly is through how you live your life.

It’s not a set of rules and regs that you have to obey. It becomes a matter of the heart.
First, he tells us that God’s promises will have a purifying effect on us.
If we experience the promises of God in our lives, we now have more of a desire to honor Him. We want to be pure.

It’s the belief (matter of the heart) that keeps us pure. Not the rules.
Second, he tell us that we will escape the corruption (literally means since you have already escaped) you will share His divine nature.

You will have the genetics of your heavenly father. And if you follow those genes and you follow your father’s example, you will be spared the corruption around you.

You won’t be sucked into sin and trouble.
As parents, we try to get our kids to make the smart and wise choices in their life, knowing that if they listen to our wisdom and experience, they will avoid the pitfalls of life.

God is saying that if you live godly (in other words, you reflect Jesus in your lives) you will avoid the sin and bad stuff that is all around.

And if you reflect Jesus and avoid the sins all around, you now are showing your father’s nature.
Let’s see if we can rephrase that in one sentence:
Since you are saved and now have the genes and attributes of your heavenly father, you are already equipped to (live godly) reflect Jesus and be like your heavenly father (his attributes) in how you live.
You can’t have the life God wants for you unless you are godly. And the only way to be godly is through how you live your life. So we’ll see how God wants you to live your life.
