Formation: Old Testament – 39 books, New Testament 27 books

OLD TESTAMENT – Can be viewed as 3 main sections

I. First 17 Books:
a. Law – 1st 5 books (also called the Pentateuch), Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy – Moses is credited
as the primary author – REDEMPTIVE in nature
b. History - Joshua Judges 1st and 2nd Samuel Ruth 1st and 2nd Kings 1st and 2nd Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Ester
c. This nature of this section – The Law, Redemption, History

II. Middle 5 books - Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon, are viewed as Poetry and are individual and experiental. They have a very personal nature.

III. Last 17 books – Prophetic
a. Major Prophets (longer books) (5) - Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel
b. Minor Prophets (shorter books) (12) - Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi

NEW TESTAMENT – Can be viewed as 3 main sections

I. Gospels and History (foundation for meeting Jesus and the growth of His church) (5 books) - Matthew Mark Luke John Acts (also The Acts of the Apostles)

II. The Epistles – 21 letters written to various churches and people divided into two groups:
a. Letters written by Paul (14*)
i. Nine letters written to churches - Romans 1st & 2nd Corinthians Galatians Ephesians Philippians
Colossians 1st & 2nd Thessalonians
ii. Five Pastoral, Personal Epistles – 1st & 2nd Timothy Titus Philemon Hebrews (*The authorship of Hebrews
is debated, but we shall consider it as Paul’s based on Hebrews 13: 23)
b. Seven general letters written by various authors - James 1st and 2nd Peter 1st, 2nd & 3rd John Jude

III. Prophecy – the final book in the New Testament – Revelation (also known as the Revelation of Saint John)

Old Testament => 17 books comprising the law (5) and history (12); 5 books comprising poetry, individual journeys and experiential; 17 books of prophecy. All of the books of the Old Testament lead to the coming of Jesus as described in the New Testament!

New Testament => 5 foundational books introducing Jesus and His church and our mission; 21 letters to the church to build on our foundation of Christ, and 1 book of prophecy that describes the “glorious appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” in the Revelation.
