c. The twelve sons of Jacob:

Reuben — Genesis 29: 32; Simeon — Genesis 29: 33; Levi — Genesis 29: 34; Judah — Genesis 29: 35 (Line of Christ: Genesis 49: 8– 10); Dan — Genesis 30: 6; Naphtali — Genesis 30: 8; Gad — Genesis 30: 11; Asher — Genesis 30: 13; Issachar — Genesis 30: 18; Zebulon — Genesis 30: 20; Joseph — Genesis 30: 24; Benjamin — Genesis 35: 18. Chapter 28
Isaac sends Jacob to Laban - with additional blessing
Esau's rebellion - marries 3rd wife - a Canaanite
Esau takes a 4th wife - a daughter of Ishmael
Jacob’s dream
Promises from God: land, innumerable offspring; God with him
Declaration: This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven
Jacob sets a pillar and declares an oath
Jacob promises God a full tenth of all God gives him
Chapter 29
Jacob meets people from Haran
Jacob meets Rachel and tells him who he is
Laban invites Jacob to their home
Jacob stays a month
Jacob offers a deal: I’ll serve you 7 years for Rachel
Jacob works – but Laban deceives him and delivers Leah
Laban offers a deal: promise 7 more years and I’ll give you Rachel next week
Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah
Jacob’s children by Leah: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah
Chapter 30
Rachel is envious – gives Jacob her servant Bilhah as a wife
Jacob’s children by Bilhah: Dan, Naphtali
Jacob’s children by Zilpah: Gad, Asher
Leah trades Reuben’s mandrakes for a night with Jacob
Additional children by Leah: Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah
Jacob’s child by Rachel – Joseph
Jacob asks Laban to send him home
Laban cheats Jacob – removes speckled & spotted lambs
Joseph uses breeding techniques to produce speckled & spotted lambs – stronger sheep
Chapter 31
Relationship breakdown – Jacob & Laban
God tells Jacob to return home
Jacob meets with Rachel & Leah; tells them of God’s command
Rachel & Leah agree to leave
Departure; Rachel steals father’s household gods
Laban pursues – but God tells him to say nothing to Jacob, good or bad
Laban overtakes Jacob – It is in my power to do you harm, but God spoke to me
Why did you steal my gods?
Jacob agrees to allow Laban to look for his gods
Rachel sits on the gods – “the way of women is upon me”
Jacob berates Laban – “God saw my affliction and the labor of my hands and rebuked you last night”.
Pillar of witness – boundary declared
Jacob offers a sacrifice
Laban departs
