3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

gods - Hebrew Word: אֱלֹהִים - Transliteration: ʾelōhîm

a. gods in the ordinary sense

b. but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God

c. occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates (Ps.82)

d. and sometimes as a superlative as in angels

e. exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), × (very) great, judges, mighty.

* Taken from Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.

1. Where did the other gods come from?

Deuteronomy 32:17 (KJV)
17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

2. The other gods were the fallen angels (demons).
Deuteronomy 32:17 (NLT)

a. two separate entities

b. let’s validate

Revelation 18:2 (KJV)
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

4. Two spiritual entities are listed:

1) devils

2) foul spirits

Exodus 12:12 (KJV)
12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

5. Allow me to draw your attention to “against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment.”

6. In the Bible, anytime an idolatrous nation was destroyed, the blame fell on the gods…

a. who either abandoned the nation

b. or were overcome by stronger gods

c. for example

Isaiah 37:12 (KJV)
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?

a. God is telling Isaiah to talk to King Hezekiah

b. to remind the king who is victorious at all times

c. and again...

Isaiah 37:12 (NLT)
12 Have the gods of other nations rescued them—such nations as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Tel-assar? My predecessors destroyed them all!

7. God was with the people who destroyed these nations listed.

a. and again...

Isaiah 37:12 (MSG)
12 Have any of the gods of any of these countries ever stepped in and saved them, even one of these nations my predecessors destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who lived in Telassar?

8. Let us take a look at the Battle of the Gods.

Exodus 12:12 (NLT)
12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the LORD!

9. The ten plagues of Egypt was a fight against ten different fallen angels posing as “gods.”

1. WATERS TURN TO BLOOD_______________

Exodus 7:19-21 (KJV)
19 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and that there may be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone. 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in theriver were turned to blood. 21 And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

Egyptian god - Hapi, god of the river.

10. This god had various names and symbols, including...

a. father of life

b. and father of the gods

11. Notice that no matter what was used to contain water...

a. it all turned to blood

b. not just the Nile river

12. The Egyptians, who abhorred blood, must have been horrified when they saw:

a. their sacred life giving river

b. and all other water in their country turned to blood

2. PLAGUE OF FROGS______________________

Exodus 8:5-6 (KJV)
5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt. 6 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.

13. Egyptian goddess - Heget, goddess of fertility

14. Bringing up frogs was against the frog goddess.

15. God showed His humor by having frogs everywhere...

3. BUG INVASION_________________________

Egyptian gods - Geb, god of the dust of the earth

- Khepri - a scarab faced god (beetle) with the head of a fly

a. also considered as a creator

17. The idea for this god came from watching a dung beetle roll dung across the ground.

18. From there the Egyptians translated that as this god rolling the sun and the moon across the sky.

19. In response, God created something new that had never been on the planet before...

Exodus 8:16-17 (KJV)
16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt. 17 And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

20. Here we have the creation of lice/gnats.

Exodus 8:18-19 (KJV)
18 And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast. 19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

21. You can’t get any dumber than that...

a. bringing about twice as many upon yourself

b. but that wasn’t all

Psalm 78:42-44 (KJV)
42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy. 43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan: 44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.
22. Here we see the ten plagues being mentioned again.

Psalm 78:45 (KJV)
45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

flies - Hb - arob - mosquitoes

a. various insects that swarm

divers sorts of flies - gnats, mosquitoes as well as other swarming insects

23. This showed the helplessness of the insect god to protect Egypt.

24. This was a two against the only True One conflict.

4. SWARMS OF FLIES______________________

Exodus 8:22-24 (KJV)
22 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. 23 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be. 24 And the LORD did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

Egyptian goddess - Uatchit - lady of the marshes
25. The creation of flies exposed the powerlessness of this goddess to keep insects away.

26. Hebrew - Beelzebub, the god of flies, was worshipped to protect the people from such insects.

27. Cleanliness was necessary in ritual worship,

a. the flies and their eggs/maggots made everything unclean to practice their idolatry

31. But what is even more interesting is...Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace

a. what furnace

furnace - Hb - kibshan - a smelting furnace for metals

a. did we get the word “kitchen” from this

Genesis 19:28 (KJV)
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

32. Same Hebrew word for furnace in this verse.

33. In this verse, it refers to the smoke of the destruction of Sodom...

a. so the word is not limited to a smelting furnace

34. There are two furnaces in question here:

#1. The slave furnace that the Hebrews used to make bricks.

35. This would show that the Egyptian gods were powerless against the simple ashes of a slave furnace.

#2. The Furnace dedicated to Typhon, an evil god who received human sacrifices.

36. These sacrifices were done to ward of plagues.

37. If this is the case, then Moses used those very ashes to produce another plague instead of averting one.

38. In either case, Isis was unable to protect the Egyptians from such plagues.

7. HAIL MIXED WITH FIRE__________________

Exodus 9:23 (KJV)
23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

b. instead of these elements helping the Egyptians

c. they became instruments of destruction at God's command

8. A PLAGUE OF LOCUST___________________

Exodus 10:13-15 (KJV)
13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

Egyptian god -Serapis who was supposed to protect the land from locusts.

- Seth, god of storms and disaster

41. The locusts came and left at God's command, proving that:

b. and that the gods of Egypt were false and powerless

42. These destructive locusts are larger than the ordinary grasshopper.

43. It has a large mouth with four incisive teeth which cut like scissors.

45. They can cover fields and form a solid bed, six to eight inches thick.

a. the noise they make eating can be heard at a great distance

48. This is a picture of the outer darkness of hell

10. DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN SONS_________

Exodus 12:29-30 (KJV)
29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. 30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Egyptian god - Pharaoh

a. whoever was Pharaoh was supposed to be the ultimate power of Egypt

49. The death of the firstborn was aimed against all Egyptian gods who were supposed to protect both man and beasts.

50. This was proof that:

a. no god of Egypt had power to stand against God

b. no man claiming to be a god had power over death

c. but Jesus did

51. The Egyptians worshiped many forms of nature:
a. the sun, moon, stars, planets

b. rivers, animals -- even onions and leeks

52. What is interesting is that the Egyptians believed

a. that when the giants made war on the gods

b. they fled to Egypt and took refuge in sea creatures

c. which were then worshiped (new gods)

53. Reincarnation was strongly believed by the Egyptians.

54. Like Hindus and other Orientals, they taught that departed loved ones were reborn in the shape of animals.

55. If any animal was killed, some relative would be killed.

56. Hence, animal sacrifice was an abomination to the Egyptians,

a. and the pestilence on their livestock was a judgment upon their gods

Deuteronomy 10:17 (KJV)
17 For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:

Prayer of Salvation

Dear Lord,
I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself. I am sorry and I repent. I ask that you forgive me. I believe that you died on the cross to save me. You did for me what I could not do for myself and I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life. Lord, I love you. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. Thank you that I will spend eternity with you.
Amen
