SERMON: Acts 12:1-24 – “The Ultimate Sovereign King”

“The plans and lives of the most powerful people in the world are under the control of our sovereign God, who builds His church; we look to Him for answers to our prayers and we live for His glory and not our own.”

1. The Sovereignty of God

2. The Supremacy of Prayer

3. The Significant Consequence of Pride

“But the Word of God grew and multiplied” Acts 12:24
1. In Acts 12:1-4, We read that Herod persecuted the church and that he killed James, the brother of John. Why is it that some godly Christians suffer martyrdom and others live? We also read at the end of chapter , Acts 12:20-23 of the death of Herod. Why does God strike some evil men down and allow others to live?
2. What was the response by the church to Peter’s imprisonment?
3. What was so surprising about the church’s reaction to Peter being released from prison?
4. Read Colossians 4:2, what does the Apostle Paul tell us about prayer? What does it mean that we should be vigilant or watchful in prayer? How would being watchful motivate and shape our prayers?
5. Why do you think that it is significant that Herod left Jerusalem and went to Caesarea in verse 19?
6. What was Herod’s sin that God struck him down?
7. Read Psalm 8. How does a right view of God and our relationship to Him cause us to live with?
8. Herod was a very influential and powerful person what does this account in Acts 12 remind us about God’s plans and our plans?
