CHAPEL ROCK

Heavy Metal Playlist

Heavy Metal Playlist

There are Psalms are where the writer (usually David) calls down God’s judgment on his enemies. When you read these Psalms, they sound angry. There is a passionate militancy inherent in these songs. It really does remind me of a Heavy Metal playlist.

“Heavy Metal Playlist"
> Psalm 58

Imprecate, “to invoke or call down evil or curses upon someone.” The opposite of blessing. This is one of several imprecatory psalms (also, Psalm 6; 35; 69; 83; 109; 137).

In his book Metalheads, psychologist Jeffrey Arnett (PIC) refers to heavy metal concerts as "the sensory equivalent of war"

A. Concern for Justice (vv. 1–2)
B. The Lies of the Wicked (vv. 3–5)
C. Prayer for Justice (vv. 6–8)
C′. Expectation of Justice (v. 9)
B′. The Joy of the Righteous (v. 10)
A′. Affirmation of Justice (v. 11)

Luke 6:27–38, 27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also.

Romans 2:6–8, 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

BIG IDEA: Anger over injustice and wickedness is okay, when you give it God and trust Him to take vengeance.

YOU GET VENGEANCE BY REQUESTING JUSTICE:
But we don’t pray for evil people to be punished, and we certainly don’t seek to achieve that ourselves. We pray for justice to be done.

YOU PROCESS INJURY BY RELEASING CONTROL:

BIG IDEA: Anger over injustice and wickedness is okay, when you give it God and trust Him to take vengeance.

Be ready for Him to use YOU to address the injustices in the world!
