“Gospel Music"
> Psalm 110
“Gospel” was used to describe a new style of church music, songs that were easy to grasp and more easily singable than the traditional church hymns of the time
Four distinct styles of gospel music: Quartet style (Southern), Traditional gospel (choir/piano/organ), Contemporary gospel (Urban), and Praise & Worship (CCM/band).
Messianic / Royal Psalms: 2, 18, 22, 45, 72, and 110
Big Idea: The essence of the Gospel is that Jesus is better!
There are 2 vital places that this Psalm highlights where we see Jesus being better:
JESUS’ LORDSHIP IS BETTER
Hebrews 5:5–10, 5In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek” 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
Alexander Maclaren wrote,“The choice for every man is, being crushed beneath his foot, or being exalted to sit with him on his throne.
JESUS’ VICTORY IS BETTER
Acts 2:29–39, 29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” ’ 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
In his commentary on this Psalm, Martin Luther wrote, "We must live in the midst of Christ’s enemies.… However, it is not the meaning of this verse that we physically resist our enemies, which is part of the thinking of the anabaptists and other rebels. In his kingdom, Christ has nothing to do with secular power and government. Nor are we Christians able to defeat and subdue the devil and the world by means of physical power or weapons.”
