THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE BIBLE

John 21:25 (NLT)
25 Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.

1. Here we see that there could have been many other books written about Jesus.

2. What most believers do not realize is that the Bible does mention other books within itself.

3. Just because the Bible mentions another book does not mean that the book is inspired.

4. Here is a list of other books mentioned in the bible...

a. but are not part of the bible

Numbers 21:14 (KJV)
14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

5. Our first book is mentioned here:

1. The Book of the Wars of the Lord

6. What this "book of the wars of the Lord" refers to is not known.

a. but, it is a memorial book

b. meaning it is a book written by Moses to remind the children of Israel what God did for them
7. It obviously gives another account of what God did:

a. at the Red Sea where they crossed through

b. at the brooks of Arnon where they defeated Amalek

8. It is a reference to...

Exodus 17:14 (KJV)
14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

9. Amelek was a giant (nephilim) that had ambushed Israel when they had let their guard down.

10. This is where Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ arms so Joshua would win the war against the Amalekites.

11. The Book of the Wars of the Lord is available today.

2. The Book of Jasher

12. Jasher is not named after a person.

a. it means “righteous”

Joshua 10:13 (KJV)
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
13. Here we see the Bible referring to Jasher as a reference book.

14. The Bible would not refer us to a fake or false reference.
Jasher is also known as :

a. The Book of the Just

b. The Book of the Pious

c. The Book of the Upright

d. The Book of the Songs

- ballads song by people doing exploits

e. The Book of the Heros

f. The Book of the Righteous

g. The Book of Records

15. It is not mentioned in the Septuagint.

a. which is the Greek translating of the Bible

16. The Book of Jasher is available today.

2 Samuel 1:18 (KJV)
18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

17. It fills in the “back story” of some of the biblical accounts.

a. basically, it fills in the blanks

b. and recounts many extraordinary, supernatural events

3. The Chronicles of David

1 Chronicles 27:24 (KJV)
24 Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.

18. These would be King David’s official records.

19. Possibly written by:

a. either David himself

b. or a king’s court scribe

20. Books are available but if they are exact records is unknown to me.

4. The Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah

2 Chronicles 27:7 (KJV)
7 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all his wars, and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

21. Obviously, there are chapters referring to the deeds of different kings

a. notice the acts of Jotham

22. Jotham became a king over Israel at the age of 25

2 Chronicles 35:26-27 (KJV)
26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,

27 And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

23. Two books are mentioned here:

a. the Law of the Lord

b. the book of the kings of Israel and Judah

the Law of the Lord- refers that Josiah was obedient to the law

a. what we call the Torah

b. or the first 5 books of our Bible

24. And a possible chapter reference, .

a. another King over Israel

2 Chronicles 36:8 (KJV)
8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.

25. A sad reference concerning Jehoiakim who committed abominations.

26. Evidently, the book of the kings of Israel and Judah is a record of all the kings and their reign.

1 Chronicles 9:1 (KJV)
1 So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.

27. The book of the kings of Israel and Judah also contained genealogies.

28. Books are available but if they are exact records is unknown to me.

5. The Book of the Kings of Israel

2 Chronicles 20:34 (KJV)
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.

29. Here we see another two books being mentioned.

a. the book of Jehu the son of Hanani

- which will be covered later

b. the book of the kings of Israel

- which may actually be the book of the kings of Israel and Judah

30. Or it is a separate book since Israel and Judah were two separate kingdoms at one time.

31. We are also given the name of one of the chapters in that book...

a. the acts of Jehoshaphat

b. another king of Israel

6. The Words of the Kings of Israel

2 Chronicles 33:18 (KJV)
18 Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.

the book of the kings of Israel- whether this book is a separate book from the book of the kings of Israel and Judah is questionable

32. We may conclude that there is a possibility that the words of the seersmay either be:

a. a separate book of prophetic utterances

b. or a part of the book of the kings of Israel and

7. The Decree of David the King of Israel

a. and Solomon, David’s son

2 Chronicles 35:4 (KJV)
4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son.

33. The decrees are instructions or orders given by these kings during their respective reigns.

34. Whatever kings decreed was always chronicled.

a. as a king/priest, your words are being chronicled as well

8. The Chronicles of Samuel the Seer

1 Chronicles 29:29 (KJV)
29 Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

35. Evidently, King David was a very prominent king to behold.
******
36. Three books are mentioned here:

a. the Book of Samuel the Seer

b. the Book of Nathan the Prophet

c. the Book of Gad the Seer

37. The difference between a seer and a prophet is:

a. a seer has visions and dreams and “sees” the future

b. a prophet foretells, speaks of things to come

38. Samuel is the one who anointed David to be king.

The Book of Samuel the Seer- this refers to Samuel's personal, original records, which were used as part of 1 Samuel.

a. Samuel himself perhaps wrote 1 Sam. 1-24.

39. The Book of Samuel the seer is available today.

9. The Chronicles of Nathan the Prophet

1 Chronicles 29:29 (NLT)
29 All the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in The Record of Samuel the Seer, The Record of Nathan the Prophet, and The Record of Gad the Seer.

40. This is either:

a. part of 1 and 2 Samuel

b. or there was a book by him that we do not have today

41. Nathan was the prophet who confronted King David about his adultery with Bathsheba.

42. The Book of Nathan the Prophet is available today.

10. The Book of Gad

1 Chronicles 29:29 (MSG)
29 The history of David the king, from start to finish, is written in the chronicles of Samuel the seer, Nathan the prophet, and Gad the seer,

from start to finish - alludes that it may be more detailed than the Bible

43. This may have contributed to 1 and 2 Samuel as well.

44. We are left to believe that Nathan and Gad had some part in 1 Sam. 25 -- 2 Sam. 24.

45. The Book of Gad the seer is available today.

11. The Book of the Prophet Iddo

2 Chronicles 13:22 (KJV)
22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

46. Iddo lived during the reign of King Solomon and his heirs.

Ezra 5:1 (KJV)
1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.

son- Hb - bar - meaning a son or grandson

47. Iddo was the grandfather to Zechariah:

a. not his father as this verse alludes

b. let’s validate

Zechariah 1:1 (KJV)
1 In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

48. Berechiah was Zechariah’s father.

a. Iddo was Zechariah’s grandfather

1 Kings 13:1 (KJV)
1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

49. It is believed that this man of God was Iddo.

2 Kings 23:16 (MSG)
16 As Josiah looked over the scene, he noticed the tombs on the hillside. He ordered the bones removed from the tombs and had them cremated on the ruined altars, desacralizing the evil altars. This was a fulfillment of the word of GOD spoken by the Holy Man years before when Jeroboam had stood by the altar at the sacred convocation.

50. It is believed that Iddo prophesied this event. 300 years into the future

51. The Book of Iddo the prophet is available today.

12. The Words of Shemaiah the Prophet

2 Chronicles 12:15 (KJV)
15 Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

52. We see that Shemaiah wrote about the acts of Rehoboam.

a. and Iddo covered the genealogies

53. According to 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles:

a. the intervention of Shemaiah prevented a war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam

54. Instead of saying “thus saith the Lord’...

a. he prophesied in God's words, that "this thing is from Me"

55. The Book of Shemaiah the prophet is available today.

13. The Deeds of Uzziah by Isaiah the Prophet

2 Chronicles 26:22 (KJV)
22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write.

56. Other than the Book of Isaiah, we see that Isaiah also wrote the.

2 Chronicles 32:32 (KJV)
32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

57. Here we discover that he also wrote the

58. Does this verse allude that Isaiah may have also written parts of:

a. the book of the kings of Judah and Israel

59. Was the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

60. Handed down from prophet to prophet through the school of the prophets?

a. these are mentioned in 2 Kings chapter 2

14. The Book of Jehu

61. Jehu condemned Baasha, king of Israel, and the House of Baasha

a. accusing him of leading the people into the sin of idolatry

2 Chronicles 20:34 (NLT)
34 The rest of the events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, from beginning to end, are recorded in The Record of Jehu Son of Hanani, which is included in The Book of the Kings of Israel.

62. Jehu also challenged Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.

63. Hanani, Jehu's father, was also a prophet:

a. he rebuked king Asa of Judah

b. Asa had entered into a league with Ben-Hadad I

c. Ben-Hadad I was king of Syria

d. together they fought against the northern kingdom of Israel

15. The Record book of Ahasuerus

Esther 2:23 (KJV)
23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

book of the chronicles before the king - obviously each king had a record kept of their reign

64. Ahasuerus is given as the name of the King of Persia in the Book of Esther.

a. in the Persian, he is known as Xerxes

65. Another translation reads...

Esther 2:23 (NLT)
23 When an investigation was made and Mordecai’s story was found to be true, the two men were impaled on a sharpened pole. This was all recorded in The Book of the History of King Xerxes’ Reign.

the two men were impaled on a sharpened pole - the king had these men impaled because they had planned to wipe out all of the Jews

a. Esther, the queen, was a Jewess

Esther 6:1 (KJV)
1 On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

65. This was the king's official records of his decrees and commands.

Esther 6:1 (NLT)
1 That night the king had trouble sleeping, so he ordered an attendant to bring the book of the history of his reign so it could be read to him.

66. Abetter explanation...the book of the history of his reign.
67. In this case:

a. God kept sleep from the

b. the king had his servants read to him from the record book of the kings

68. When Ahasuerus (Xerxes) found that Mordecai had not been rewarded for saving their lives.

16. The Book of Remembrance

Malachi 3:16 (KJV)
16 Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

69. There is a book in heaven:”

a. with your name on it

b. and all the words you have spoken

c. and all the times you thought about the Lord

Revelation 1:6 (KJV)
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

70. AS it is in heaven, so it is on earth.

a. kings had everything recorded

17. The Book of Life

Daniel 12:1 (KJV)
1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

the book- is also called “the Lamb’s Book of Life”

Philippians 4:3 (KJV)
3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow labourers, whose names are in the book of life.

71. Every time a person is saved, their name is written in this book.

Revelation 20:12 (KJV)
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

72. Here we see numerous books mentioned:

a. books were opened

b. another book, The Book of Life

73. Judgment is based upon works.

Revelation 22:19 (KJV)
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

74. Taking away from this book does not mean taking away from the Bible.

75. It clearly states take away from the words of the book of this_____prophecy.

a. which refers to the book of Revelations

76. So, people can have their names removed from the book of Life.

a. let’s validate

Revelation 3:5 (KJV)
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

77. You can have your name “blotted out” from the book of life.

78. If some refused to obey these commands, would their names be blotted out?

Exodus 32:32-33 (KJV)
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. 33 And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
79. That means the “once saved always saved” doctrine is incorrect.

Psalm 69:25-26 (KJV)
25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. 26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

80. People in rebellion risk having:

a. their homes desolate

b. have no “tents”, live like vagabonds

81. The reason...they persecute Jesus instead of serving Him.

83. Their backsliding made their name to be blotted out.

84. This Psalm is also a reference to Judas Iscariot losing his place.

18. The Book of Judgment

Daniel 7:10 (KJV)
10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

85. May we conclude that there is a book of judgments from this?

86. Some folks are taking a big risk when it comes to their place in eternity.

Revelation 20:12 (KJV)
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books - are these judgment books?

19. The seven-sealed book

Revelation 5:1 (KJV)
1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

87. The dealings of mankind throughout the apocalypse.

Revelation 5:1 (MSG)
1 I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One Seated on the Throne. It was written on both sides, fastened with seven seals.

88. Revelations chapter 5 primarily deals with this Book with the seven seals.

20. An angel's book

Revelation 10:1 (KJV)
1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

89. Is this an angel or is it Jesus based upon the description.

Revelation 10:2 (KJV)
2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

90. Some theologians believe this to be Jesus since He is described as having a book in His hand.

a. you decide

Conclusion: These books evidently weren't in God's plan to be a part of our Bible.

a. but He did put in the ones He deemed necessary

Prayer of Salvation

Dear Lord,
I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself. I am sorry and I repent. I ask that you forgive me. I believe that you died on the cross to save me. You did for me what I could not do for myself and I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life. Lord, I love you. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. Thank you that I will spend eternity with you.
Amen
