SERMON: “The Good Samaritan" ~ Luke 10:25-37

“What does loving God look like in the everyday?”

1. Setting the Scene

2. Meeting the Characters

3. Learning the Lessons

“We love God who is spirit as we love our neighbor who is flesh.”
APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

1. Describe a time in your life when you have been on the receiving end of another’s grace or mercy in a time of need. How did it make you feel and how did it change your situation or perspective?
2. Read 2 Chronicles 28:8-15 which details an account of the northern kingdom (Israel) invading the southern kingdom (Judah) and bringing back hostages to Samaria. Many commentators observe that the Parable of the Good Samaritan was likely taken from this account. What similarities and truth do you observe and what is the irony and teaching of the text?
3. Read through the following texts and construct a biblical summary of God’s word regarding the treatment of others, especially those who might not be as love-able as others. How must these truths impact our own lives? Genesis 50:20-21; Exodus 23:4-5; Leviticus 19:18, 34; Job 31:16-23; Proverbs 14:21, 24:17; Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:35-36; 1 John 3:16-18.
4. What do these NT verses tell us about mercy and our neighbor? Romans 13:8, 10; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8. What type of action do these texts call us to?
5. Review the following Scriptures in your group: Leviticus 19:18; Deuteronomy 6:5; Isaiah 29:13; Hosea 6:6; Micah 6:6-8. What do these verses say about religious ritual and the actual practice of religion? Discuss the phrase ‘manic for creeds and anemic in deeds’. How is this pertinent to our text, and why would so many prefer arguing and debating religion rather than ‘doing’ it?
6. How can you be a “better” neighbor and one who honors God through valuing those around you?
